A tragic incident occurred on Monday in Sri Lanka: a Hungarian couple out for a walk was attacked by an elephant. The huge animal attacked the tourists in the Pidurangala–Sigiriya area, and the man suffered such serious injuries that his life could not be saved, Blikk reported.
Most elephants are peaceful creatures unless they feel threatened, but on Monday, a fatal accident occurred in Sri Lanka involving a Hungarian couple. A 64-year-old man and his wife were hiking in one of the country’s most popular tourist areas. They were walking in the area when an elephant charged at them from the jungle. The injured man was taken to hospital, but his life could not be saved. The exact details of the attack are not yet known. The local police are investigating the incident.
The Pidurangala-Sigiriya area is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular tourist destinations, but it is also close to the wilderness. The area around the rock fortress and Pidurangala Rock is a mix of rice fields, villages, small lodgings, and dense jungle. The habitat of elephants and the roads used by humans often overlap, increasing the chance of unexpected encounters.
Miklós Farkas, a tour guide in Sri Lanka, said that tourists should always exercise caution.
There are many national parks in the area where the incident took place. Elephants roam freely among them, as they cannot know where the boundaries of the parks are. Minneriya National Park and Hurulu Eco Park are key elephant habitats, where over 3,000 of them live in the wild,” he said.
The tour guide noted that unaccompanied solo walks can be particularly dangerous. In 2024, a Canadian tourist was attacked by an elephant in the same place after straying from the safe route.
According to information obtained by Blikk, the Hungarian Foreign Ministry has already contacted the family of the deceased man. There is no Hungarian diplomatic representation in Sri Lanka, only an honorary consul, hence the only place to turn to for help in the region is the Hungarian Embassy in New Delhi. Blikk contacted the Foreign Ministry, which responded to the incident with the following statement:
The relevant Hungarian consuls are in constant contact with the victim’s family and the Sri Lankan authorities handling the case, providing all possible assistance to the relatives. The district police station is conducting an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.”
