Justitia is a collective image of the ancient Greek goddesses Dike (of law, justice, and truth) and Themis (of justice) introduced by the Romans.
According to legend, Justitia’s father was Jupiter, and according to some myths, Saturn. The Romans described and depicted Justitia as a venerable blindfolded woman, holding a sword in her right hand and the scales of Themis in her left . The scales symbolized the weighing of the truth of the claims of both sides in finding guilt; the blindfolded expression of the belief that justice is impartial; the sword was a symbol of authority and showed that retribution could come quickly and definitively.
