Since e-scooters appeared on the roads, the number of accidents has been continuously rising worldwide. In Hungary, such accidents increased by more than 50 percent in a single year, Semmelweis University warns in a press release. Between March and October 2025, the Department of Traumatology at Semmelweis University treated on average at least one injured e-scooter rider per day.
According to the Department of Traumatology at Semmelweis University, this summer, sometimes two or more injured patients were treated each day, most commonly with head and limb injuries. Due to its small wheels, an e-scooter can easily tip over if the rider hits a pothole or bump. In such cases, the rider usually falls over the handlebars and, if not wearing a helmet or other protective gear, will almost certainly be injured.
E-scooter accidents in Hungary commonly result in severe head and limb injuries.
Approximately three-quarters of these accidents cause skull injuries, with 10–20 percent involving significant intracranial trauma (injury to the brain caused by an external force). Maxillofacial injuries (trauma to the face, mouth, or jaws) are also frequent. In higher-speed crashes, internal injuries in the chest or abdomen can occur, though these are less common.
A characteristic injury in Hungary’s e-scooter accidents is the break in the lower jaw bone. This often happens when riders fall on their chin, either due to high speed or impaired reflexes from alcohol or psychoactive substances. These fractures may not be externally visible, leading many patients to delay seeking medical treatment.
However, prompt surgical stabilization within 48 to 72 hours is crucial for optimal healing and to prevent long-term complications like limited mouth opening or temporomandibular joint issues,
warns the Budapest institution.
The severity of these accidents is influenced by factors such as nighttime riding, intoxication, speed, and lack of helmet or protective gear.
Advanced imaging technology at Semmelweis University has been instrumental in diagnosing these complex injuries with greater precision, aiding in better treatment outcomes. The institution is equipped with photon-counting CT scanners, the most advanced CT technology globally, and the very first of their kind to be introduced in Hungary.
