    With the support of the U.S. State Department, the Hungarian Interchurch Aid (MÖSZ) is launching an aid program to support young refugees from Transcarpathia (Ukraine) and those who come to Ukraine, as well as to strengthen communities in difficult situations due to the war, the organization announced on Monday.

    The memorandum of understanding on long-term cooperation was signed in Washington by Sarah B. Rogers, Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy, and MÖSZ Executive Director Kristóf Gáncs.

    The program, entitled

    Youth in the Service of Social Cohesion: Support for Internally Displaced Persons and Needy Youth in Transcarpathia”

    promotes English language learning and sports for young people in Transcarpathia through free training courses and offers them the opportunity to learn about American culture. The programs will be attended by young people aged 12 to 24 who live in difficult conditions in Transcarpathia or are internally displaced persons.

    This is an important milestone in the aid service’s nearly three decades of presence in Ukraine, as it expands its four-year-long activities to alleviate the consequences of war to a new area, thereby contributing to the creation of a peaceful future in the region.

    The MÖSZ delegation – Vitalia Manailo, head of the Ukrainian MÖSZ representation, Klára Keveházi, director of fundraising and international partnerships, and Tamás Gáti, member of the MÖSZ Board of Trustees for Education – held talks in Washington on further possible cooperation and partnerships to further expand and strengthen aid to Ukraine.

    MÖSZ, which has been present in Ukraine since 1998, has helped nearly one million people during the four-year war as part of its largest humanitarian mission to date.

    The international aid program, which covers 23 regions of Ukraine, also pays special attention to supporting refugees coming to Hungary.

    The aid service is working on both sides of the border to alleviate the suffering caused by the war, but the negative effects of the conflict, which is soon to enter its fifth year, are becoming increasingly severe, humanitarian needs are growing, and the global shortage of resources is further complicating the situation.
