For the first time since the Eiffel Tower was inaugurated in 1889, the names of 72 outstanding female researchers will be immortalized on the Parisian landmark. Among them is a woman whose life journey took her from Transylvania to Budapest and on to the “Olympus” of molecular biology: Ágnes Ullmann.
The local government of Paris has made a decision of historic significance. Until now, only 72 male names adorned the frieze on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower – a tribute to the progress of the 19th century. Now this “scientific pantheon” is being completed. As the Hungarian Embassy in Paris announced on its social media page,
Ágnes Ullmann (1927–2019) will be honored as one of the women who, despite their groundbreaking achievements, often stood in the shadow of their male colleagues.
Ágnes Ullmann’s path to becoming the “Grande Dame of Pasteur,” as she is known in France, began in Satu Mare (Szatmárnémeti, in Transylvania, Romania). She studied chemistry in Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár), then graduated in 1948 at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. There, at the Institute of Medical Chemistry under the direction of F. Brunó Straub, she laid the foundation for her career. Even then, she demonstrated exceptional talent. Together with her husband Tamás Erdős, the biochemist published two groundbreaking articles on the mechanism of action of streptomycin in the journal Nature.
Her life changed radically when she met Jacques Monod during a scholarship stay in Paris.
The future Nobel Prize winner recognized her genius. In 1960, he helped her and her husband escape from communist Hungary to Paris in a complex and life-threatening secret operation.
Hidden in the cavity of a caravan, they left their old life behind to start afresh in the service of free science at the Pasteur Institute.
In Paris, Ágnes Ullmann became a central figure in a scientific revolution. She worked closely with the legendary trio of François Jacob, Jacques Monod, and André Lwoff and was the first author of the article that introduced the term “promoter”—now a basic concept in genetics—into science. Her co-authors were none other than Nobel Prize winners Jacques Monod and François Jacob.

But Ágnes Ullmann was much more than an assistant to geniuses. As an independent scientific director, she did pioneering work:
- Catabolite repression: She clarified crucial mechanisms of gene regulation and the role of cyclic AMP.
- Bordetella pertussis: She researched the biology of the whooping cough pathogen, contributing to the development of modern vaccines.
- Academic teaching: She trained generations of researchers, including Maxime Schwartz, who later became director of the Institut Pasteur himself.
Her work was recognized worldwide. She was a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), received the Pasteur Medal in 1995, and was inducted into the French Legion of Honor in 1996. In 2002, she was awarded the Robert Koch Medal, the highest international award for microbiology.
Contemporaries such as the Hungarian academic Pál Venetianer and the researcher Éva Kondorosi remember her not only as a brilliant analyst, but also as a woman of incomparable elegance and strength of character.
She was a grande dame, a queen who commanded respect and admiration wherever she appeared,”
recalled Éva Kondorosi.
The fact that her name will now shine in golden letters on the Eiffel Tower is more than a belated honor. It is recognition of a woman who transcended boundaries – both political and scientific. Alongside Marie Curie, Ágnes Ullmann will stand there as a symbol of Hungarian-French excellence. Her name serves as a reminder that, as Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo emphasized, women play a decisive role in shaping the future of the world.
