    Tamás Freund, Marianne Rozsondai and Béla Rozsondai

    Marianne Rozsondai and Béla Rozsondai donated their unique private collection of 64 volumes of 15th-century incunabula and early 16th-century printed books to the Academy’s library, including 18 copies that are the only known examples in Hungary.

    In his welcoming speech, Tamás Freund, President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), emphasized that the Rozsonda couple’s gesture of donation goes beyond scientific support, reviving the spirit of generosity shown by the “greatest Hungarian” and founder of the prestigious National Széchenyi Library, István Széchenyi and his contemporaries who joined in his offering, which places individual responsibility in the service of the common good.

    The creation of the Collectio Rozsondaiana is due to the will and dedication of two outstanding scholars, he emphasized. Marianne Rozsondai is an internationally recognized researcher of Hungarian and European library history.

    Her academic and professional career is linked to the Manuscript Collection and Old Book Collection of the MTA Library and Information Center, where she worked as a librarian for decades.

    Tamás Freund recalled that Marianne Rozsondai and her husband, Béla Rozsondai, worked together for decades to compile the catalogue of the MTA Library’s early printed books, which is a handbook used all over the world. This is the catalogue that is now being expanded with volumes of unparalleled value.

    The collection comprises 64 independently published works, including volumes produced in Italy, France, Germany, and Switzerland, from printing houses in cities such as Venice, Rome, Lyon, Strasbourg, Basel, Nuremberg, and Cologne.

    The authors include ancient classics (Aristotle, Seneca, Suetonius, Plautus, Ovid, Josephus Flavius); Church Fathers and medieval masters (St. Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Thomas à Kempis); and Renaissance humanists, such asPetrarch. Tamás Freund pointed out that Franciscan preacher Pelbárt Temesvári is represented in the collection with four volumes.

    Every work, volume, and book collection has its own unique history. From now on, researchers and interested parties can admire and explore the secrets of the collection, all thanks to two great men, two outstanding scholars. May God bless them and may they find followers. As long as the Academy stands, their deeds will not be forgotten,”

    concluded the president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, who presented the couple with a commemorative medal as a token of his gratitude.

    It was announced at the event that of the 64 volumes, 55 are incunabula (pre-1501) and 9 are early antique (1501-1510). Forty-six of the works are new additions to the MTA library, and 18 volumes cannot be found in any other library in Hungary. This is a significant enrichment of Hungary’s cultural heritage.
