After Szebasztián Szabó’s silver medal on Wednesday, the Hungarian delegation added three new podium finishes to its tally on Thursday evening at the European Aquatics Short Course Championships in Lublin, Poland.
The 1,500 m freestyle final was packed with stars alongside Hungary’s Zalán Sárkány and Dávid Betlehem, including defending champion and Olympic 800 m gold medalist Daniel Wiffen (Ireland), former world and European champion in this discipline, gold medalist in open water swimming in Tokyo and world record holder Florian Wellbrock (Germany), and Turkish junior world record holder Kuzey Tunçelli.
As expected, Sárkány took the lead immediately after the start and tried to leave the field behind, but Wiffen, swimming next to him, stayed close, and Wellbrock and Betlehem were also not far behind after a third of the distance.
At 1,000 meters, Sárkány had a lead of almost two seconds over his Irish rival,
and at that point it seemed certain that the three podium places would be shared among the four swimmers mentioned. With 200 meters to go, Sárkány was leading by one and a half seconds, but Wiffen launched a tremendous final sprint and overtook the Hungarian before the penultimate turn, who had no answer and ultimately won silver.
The 22-year-old Hungarian swimmer finished with a time of 14:15.51 minutes, beating the national record set by Dávid Betlehem, who finished fourth this time with a time of 14:23.27 minutes. Betlehem narrowly missed out on the bronze medal, but remained within his previous record of 4:19.65 minutes.
On Friday morning, Dávid Betlehem announced that he would not continue competing in the continental event and would be returning home. “I feel completely exhausted right now. I had to pay attention to so many things, and I competed a lot during the fall. Now I am completely drained, especially mentally. I swam my main event with honor, but I think I simply have nothing left in me – now I need some time at home with my family, away from it all, to rebuild myself so that next year the real Dávid Betlehem can compete again,” explained the young swimmer.
In the women’s 200 m freestyle final, Minna Ábrahám won her first individual medal at an international adult championship. Ábrahám started the competition strongly and moved up to third place behind the two leaders halfway through the race. The Dutch swimmer Marrit Steenbergen then put in a final spurt and it seemed as if she could not be caught,
but Ábrahám managed to finish second with an enormous final spurt, significantly beating her personal best (1:53.15) with a time of 1:51.47.
She was not far behind Katinka Hosszú’s Hungarian record from 2014 (1:51.18).
In the final of the 4×50-meter mixed relay, the Hungarian team consisting of Szebasztián Szabó, Ádám Jászó, Petra Senánszky, and Minna Ábrahám won the silver medal.
After the two men’s races, the team took second place, with Senánszky holding the position, followed by Ábrahám, who was still in contention for gold with a tremendous sprint, but remained in second place.
The Hungarians set a national record of 1:28.04, shaving more than two seconds off the 1:30.24 time set two years ago in Otopeni, and finishing just 78 hundredths of a second behind the winning Italians, who set a new world record (1:27.26) for the continental competition.
“A lot of work went into this, I worked really hard in America, and I came here thinking that anything could happen. Nevertheless, I did not think I would swim such a time in the 200 freestyle,” Ábrahám recalled her first final of the day to MTI, roughly half an hour before the relay. “Fortunately, I already have some experience in this, I did not even feel the end, it did not hurt, and the time was spectacular.”
“It was a great experience to compete with the team. I do not think anyone would have thought we could achieve such a good time. We all did very well, but I think Minna and Ádám were the real heroes in this relay today,” said Szebasztián Szabó, who won the delegation’s first medal on Wednesday.
The Hungarian team has won a total of four silver medals at the continental championships in Poland so far. The competition continues until Sunday, December 7.
