The government and Budapest’s leadership must bring order to night transport in the capital and put an end to the current unacceptable conditions, urged the capital’s president of the Mi Hazánk Movement (Our Homeland – right wing opposition – editor’s note) at a press conference on Tuesday.
Csaba Balog said that many people board buses under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and their behavior poses a danger to drivers and fellow passengers. The government’s anti-drug campaign remains a cheap campaign promise, as does the capital’s guarantee of safety on public transport with special police forces, if there is no change in this situation, he said.
Balog urged an increase in the number of police officers and security guards on public transport and emphasized that, under these circumstances, the capital city’s efforts to persuade motorists to use public transport cannot be successful.
The politician said that criminals in Hungary today have more rights than normal people. In his view, this can be changed by having more police officers on the streets and fewer drug addicts.

The photo shows the driver’s seat of a bus that was attacked after the window was smashed. The government’s anti-drug campaign was really just a publicity stunt. In 2025, they announced decisive action against drugs, but today, in 2026, nothing has changed on night buses. Passengers and drivers are regularly exposed to aggressive or immoral behavior from people who board buses under the influence of drugs or alcohol. People who are drugged, drunk, dirty, and aggressive often travel on night buses.
The government regularly pretends to be solving pressing problems. The reality, however, is completely different. In practice, cash protection has not been implemented, the online parking convenience fee has not been abolished, and the drug situation has not changed in any noticeable way. Public safety has not improved. Yet the government had promised to do all of these things.
The capital’s left-wing-liberal leadership is doing everything it can to make life as difficult as possible for motorists, while at the same time failing to do everything it can to make public transport an attractive alternative for the capital’s residents.
Trams and buses running late at night or in the early hours of the morning are often unsafe. Not only passengers, but also drivers travel or work in a threatening environment. The recordings from cameras installed in vehicles are not primarily used to maintain order, but rather to hold drivers accountable, in line with the procedures seen in liberal Western European cities. Intimidation is an everyday occurrence at the BKK (Center for Budapest Transport).
The passengers themselves suffer the most damage. People who litter the vehicles, drug addicts, and criminals frequently cause service disruptions and delays. Passengers are regularly terrified on the buses. Mi Hazánk Movement demands greater public safety, better public transport, and less dangerous workplaces. The capital city and the government must take immediate action to put an end to these unacceptable conditions,”
