The government has begun a systematic review of the European Union’s powers, said the minister responsible for European Union affairs at a conference on national sovereignty and EU powers, expansion of powers in the fields of education, culture, and family policy on Tuesday in Budapest.
János Bóka said that the investigation had become necessary because the EU had made it common practice to stealthily expand its powers. “This is a question of sovereignty, as the EU is based on the principle of the transfer of powers, with member states deciding in which areas they wish to cooperate through their institutions,” he said, emphasizing that if the decision is taken out of the hands of the member states, the sovereignty of the member states will be seriously damaged.
EU law is also gaining ground in the areas of education, culture, and family policy, and the current counterbalances are not working, thus new solutions and new tools are needed,”
he said.
The aim of the review is to uncover the practice of creeping expansion of powers in the areas of economic policy, energy policy, migration, the rule of law, education, culture, and family policy. They are also looking for answers as to why EU instruments protecting member state powers do not work in practice, said Bóka.
In the minister’s view, the functioning of the EU is currently determined by political myths, one of which is the “myth of an ever closer EU.” In contrast, the sovereignist position is that member states are the masters of the future of European integration, he pointed out, emphasizing that member states are the sole bearers of sovereignty.
He stated that the goal should not be to transcend nation states, but to strengthen them. Without sovereign nations, we are not talking about integration, but empire building, he said, adding that Europe is also a community of values shared by the participating nations, and that the values of national communities form the inner core of sovereignty.
If we give this up, European integration will also cease to exist,”
János Bóka argued.
Balázs Hankó, Minister for Culture and Innovation, emphasized that the founders of the EU were wise because they knew exactly that Europe’s strength comes from the traditions and cultures of its nations. Then something changed: communism was replaced by consumerism, he added, noting that both “isms” share the false idea of freedom.
As the minister sees it, they created a world “where our culture was made obsolete, where our families and having children began to be ridiculed, where character and values were emptied of meaning, and where everything that did not satisfy the demands of global powers was questioned.”
Today, they want to dismantle national identity and replace it with an artificial, common European identity, he said, adding that Christianity is no longer important in today’s Europe, and LGBTQ rights are becoming more important than families and having children according to the order of the created world. “Today, everything in the EU is about allowing the country to be exposed to migrants. We are being sanctioned because we do not want to go to war,” he continued, adding that Hungary is constantly being punished as a full member.
We cannot allow this to happen; we must speak out against it. We cannot allow our national consciousness to be eroded,”
he emphasized.
Balázs Hankó pointed out that European identity is undergoing a transformation, with the influx of masses undermining everything that is national and that was once European. “The EU has renounced its Christian roots,” he emphasized.
He also drew attention to the fact that the family and culture are in ideological and material danger, and that there is interference in education. As he said, the EU is interfering in the affairs of nation states in areas where it has no right to do so.
As an example, he mentioned the exclusion of Hungarian students from the Erasmus program in higher education, which he said was a conceptual issue. “They made a summary decision based on fabricated accusations, without reason and without investigation,” he said.
Balázs Hankó stated: “This is not the first time that we Hungarians have defended our nation against oppressive rule, nor is it the first time we have defended Europe.” He emphasized that we were and are the bearers of Christianity and normality.
