When Carole King sang about feeling the earth move in 1971, she was prophesying the moment 55 years later when her songwriting descendant Alanis Morissette would take over Douglass Park and bring more than tens of thousands of people together to sing “you, you, you oughta know” from the depths of their jagged little hearts.

It was one of the most powerful moments of the Riot Fest 2026 weekend, and yes, underneath the soggy abyss, you could feel the ground shift a little with the weight of the crowd all moving together in the moment.

Many sacrifices were made to get to Morissette’s set Sunday night: Shoes were surrendered to the mud. People forfeited seeing William Shatner, whose set was pushed back after weather delays and the “Star Trek” actor was rebooked at the same time. And a good amount of sanity was abandoned after dealing with a full day of rain with attendees trenching through the thick sludge and going nowhere fast. It’s almost like Morissette wrote an “Ironic” song forecasting this very moment, too. Yet to see her fully command the stage with the opening harmonica swing of “Hand In My Pocket” to “All I Really Want” and all the songs that have become a lifeline for many over the years, it was worth it.

Released in 1995, Morissette’s magnum opus “Jagged Little Pill” still resonates 30 years later. It’s a young woman’s guide to living that’s been passed down from mothers to daughters, aunts to nieces and older to younger sisters. At this point, it would be easier to find a group of people that Morissette hasn’t influenced. Not just casual fans either, but nearly all of the current Top 40.

Taylor Swift has sung her praises. So has PINK, Katy Perry and Halsey. Three weeks ago, Morissette was the surprise guest at Olivia Rodrigo’s inaugural Daisy Chain Fields Festival where the godmother of confessional songwriting was recoronated for a new generation.

There are few cultural figureheads that have continued to impact the zeitgeist like Morissette, with Riot Fest just adding one more notch on the timeline.

The hourlong set (which was dedicated to New Found Glory guitarist Chad Gilbert who passed away Sunday after a battle with cancer) started with a barrage of ephemera from the archives. Video screens scrolled through an endless amount of magazine clippings, late-night show tapings, iconic music videos and charged interviews where the then-young Canadian singer-songwriter was vehement about her stances on feminism, sexism and the undue pressures on Gen X. It was an effective setup to transport you back into the mind frame of the era when her works first came out and, sadly, to realize little has changed. Morissette pointed this out too.

During a soaring performance of “Right Through You” — the song she wrote decrying the nefarious male music execs she had to endure early on — alarming statistics started popping up on the video screens. “81% of women reported some form of sexual harassment in their lifetime,” read one. “On average, women make 68% of what men make for the same work,” read another. “More than 120 million girls around the world have experienced sexual violence,” the scroll continued, later adding, “women experience high rates of depression, anxiety, PTSD and eating disorders.”

These are all, sadly, experiences Morissette had as a teen, which inspired the bulk of “Jagged Little Pill.” Over the years, she’s continued to remain open about it all, and in so doing, she has kept these important conversations going and brought it into the modern day. She and “Juno” writer Diablo Cody created the Tony Award-winning “Jagged Little Pill” musical doing the same, where they personified each of the songs within a storyline that tackled current affairs.

Morissette and the solid rock band behind her (which once featured the late Taylor Hawkins) also added a few other catalog hits to the set, like the haunting “Uninvited” and the sweet “Thank U.” But it was the “Jagged Little Pill” moments that really took on new life and made you hope Morissette keeps the heartbeat alive 30 years from now, too.

Alanis Morissette set list for Sept. 20, 2026, show at Riot Fest

Hand in My Pocket
Right Through You
Hands Clean
Head Over Feet
You Learn
Smiling
Ironic
All I Really Want
You Oughta Know
Uninvited
Thank U
