“Géza Erdélyi can be placed in the long line of those who have always known that matters of faith are also matters of the nation,” said the Hungarian Prime Minister at the farewell ceremony for retired Reformed bishop Géza Erdélyi on Friday in Rimavská Sobota, Slovakia.
Viktor Orbán recalled that Géza Erdélyi took the lead of the Reformed Church in Slovakia during difficult times, amid the turmoil of regime change, at a time when the Hungarian community had to learn to hold its heads high again after decades of silence and the inhumane decrees of the communist regime. When not only churches and schools had to be reclaimed, but also self-awareness, self-esteem, and self-confidence, so that “things could be as they once were,” he recalled.

He worked to ensure that the Hungarians of Slovakia could once again find a home in their homeland, where they could speak their native language, learn, and pray, he recalled about Géza Erdélyi, adding

He also emphasized that the bishop’s gentleness was not a weakness, but a disciplined strength: he knew no compromise when it came to the truth of the church and the Hungarian nation.
Viktor Orbán said that he and Géza Erdélyi also agreed that it is false to say that God’s affairs belong only to the church and the affairs of the world belong only to politics. Opponents often talk about the separation of church and state, but what they really mean is the banishment of Christianity from public life, the removal of God from history and from the “great epic of the survival of the Hungarian people,” he warned.
Géza Erdélyi knew and proclaimed that nations also have a mission, he recalled, adding that the Hungarian constitution, wisely avoiding the liberal trap of separation, states that the state and the church operate separately. In other words, the goals may be common, but the means, methods, and paths are always different,”
he pointed out.
The prime minister also pointed out that the pastor defeats evil with gentleness, but in politics, gentleness is not always effective; sometimes harshness and ruthlessness are necessary, “even towards ourselves.”

However, the future of Hungarians cannot be built on the ruthlessness of politics, the insensitivity of public struggles, or even the obvious truths of reason, Viktor Orbán emphasized, pointing out that even in the most tense times, and especially then, the national community needs the balancing spirit of gentle people.
He recalled that Hungary awarded Géza Erdélyi a state honor in the spring of 2005. The award ceremony was to take place after the December 5 referendum on the citizenship of Hungarians living beyond the border, but the bishop did not accept the honor so that he could continue to look his congregation in the eye. “It was not glory, protocol, political trends, or momentary interests that guided him, but a single standard: the gaze of his congregation, the trust of his community, and his upright stance before God”, said the Hungarian Prime Minister.
Viktor Orbán finally thanked Géza Erdélyi for teaching through his sermons and proving through his life that faith is not a painkiller but a source of strength, and that being Hungarian is not a choice but a mission.
Reformed pastor and former bishop László Tőkés preached at the ceremony, and the deceased was bid farewell by Ján Semjan, deputy bishop of the Reformed Christian Church in Slovakia, and Zoltán Balog, bishop of the Dunamellék district of the Reformed Church in Hungary, alongside the Hungarian Prime Minister.
