The Pető method, designed to help children with physical disabilities, and the Hungarian saddle, a symbol of the nation’s equestrian culture, have been added to the Collection of Hungarikums. With the latest decision by the Hungarikum Committee, there are now 98 items listed among the national treasures, announced the Ministry of Agriculture.
The collection of Hungarikums now includes the conductive education method established by physician and special education teacher András Pető. The method is still used worldwide today.
Conductor qualifications can only be obtained in Hungary and are part of public education and public health, meaning that those in need can access the service with support within the framework of the state social system.
Since 2014, the Hungarian government has also made the service available to Hungarians living beyond the border, the Ministry of Agriculture recalled.
The Hungarian saddle, a type of Eastern saddle, has also become a Hungarikum.
The wooden saddle, constructed upon a robust wooden framework and reinforced with front and rear straps, was a proven design used over millennia to ensure the protection of the horse’s back.
It was used effectively by the Hungarian light cavalry in battles against the Turks. After settling in the Carpathian Basin, it underwent certain developments, and the Tiszafüred version was highly valued in the everyday life and festive occasions of our peasantry.
The Collection of Hungarian Values has been expanded with the Cake of Hungary competition, which, according to the announcement, has been organized by the Hungarian Confectioners’ Guild for 18 years. The cake, made from traditional Hungarian ingredients, is usually presented by confectioners throughout the country on August 20, the anniversary of the founding of the state.

The Bükk Cave of Prehistoric Man has also been added to the Collection of Hungarian Values, as its archaeological finds testify to the presence of innovative humans in the Bükk region since prehistoric times. Even in prehistoric times, it stood out for its industry, representing an independent culture with its technique of making laurel leaf-shaped stone tools.
A botanical garden has also been added to the Collection of Hungarian Values.
Founded in the 1800s, the Szarvas Arboretum, with its 82 hectares, is the largest dendrological collection in the country, the guardian of Hungary’s plant genetic resources, and a garden of national conservation importance.
It is home to an old mountain sequoia tree, which is unique in Hungary and can be considered the symbol of the garden.
Old Hungarian grape varieties have also been included in the Collection of Hungarian Values, as their importance in Hungarian wine culture is unquestionable. According to the ministry’s announcement,
we have over a hundred old local varieties, but only 10-15 of these remain at a significant level of cultivation.
Most of our better-known old grape varieties are only found on a few dozen hectares, while the less common ones are now only found in variety collections.
With the decision of the Hungarikum Committee, the number of items in the Collection of Hungarikums has risen to 98, and we now have 162 outstanding national treasures in the Collection of Hungarian Values.
