The current EU agricultural support system must be maintained and the resources allocated to farmers must be preserved. In this struggle, our country is counting on France, said Minister of Agriculture István Nagy, who met with Annie Genevard, France’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, on Thursday in Paris.
During the meeting the Hungarian minister had drawn attention to the need to preserve the predictability and stability of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in order to ensure that nothing jeopardizes farmers’ livelihoods, competitiveness, and food security.
“Hungary remains committed to the CAP having a separate budget and two pillars, as this ensures the long-term sustainability of European agriculture and the food industry. This system cannot be radically changed, because that would jeopardize producers and our daily bread. That is why Hungary is prepared to go to any lengths to protect the EU funds allocated to farmers,” he added.
István Nagy said that Hungary is currently undergoing a generational change and a renewal of its entire agriculture and food industry.
For this reason, Hungary provides farmers with the highest level of co-financing in Europe, at 80 percent, in addition to EU subsidies.
This means that three times as much money is being allocated to agricultural development as in the previous financing cycle. In this way, we are not only increasing farmers’ profitability and added value, but also modernizing the entire sector and putting it on a new footing.
The minister also pointed out that there is a lot of attention in Hungary on the impact of free trade agreements on agriculture. That is why our country opposes the unrestricted influx of Ukrainian agricultural products into the EU and does not support the EU-Mercosur agreement in any form, while France opposes it in its current form.
We continue to consider the principle of the so-called “mirror clause” to be of paramount importance: based on this principle, food products entering the European Union must comply with the same rules and regulations as food products produced in the EU,
he wrote.
The minister explained that a change of approach is also needed in the field of animal health. It is an important achievement that European livestock is free of viruses.
However, diseases cause such great economic damage that it is difficult to deal with. In order to effectively combat epidemics, the issue of vaccination must be re-examined and put on the agenda of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting, István Nagy emphasized.
