The Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, have long seemed like an unattainable, distant wonder that required traveling to one of the northern countries to see. In recent years, however, it has become increasingly common for this special phenomenon to be visible in Hungary as well. Although it is still rare and unpredictable, it can be admired in our country under the right conditions.
Due to Hungary’s geographical location, the Northern Lights are only visible during periods of extremely strong solar activity. These usually occur at the following periods:
- During intense solar flares and geomagnetic storms: The appearance of the Aurora Borealis in Hungary is almost always associated with strong or extremely strong geomagnetic storms (Kp6–Kp8 intensity). These can usually be predicted a few hours or days in advance, but their exact timing is difficult to predict.
- During the more active years of the solar cycle: During the Sun’s 11-year cycles, there are periods when large solar flares are much more frequent. The current solar cycle will peak between 2024 and 2026, so there will be a particularly good chance of observing the phenomenon over Hungary during this period.
- On clear, dark nights: Even with strong solar activity, good weather is a prerequisite: a clear sky, low light pollution, and clear visibility. The phenomenon can occur at any time from evening to dawn, but it is often most active between 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m.
The aurora borealis that lit up the sky in deep pink on October 10, 2024, was particularly spectacular, featuring flashes of green, which color combination is also extremely rare in Hungary. Most recently, Időkép captured some amazing shots of the northern light on November 12.
Observing the Aurora Borealis in Hungary depends primarily on distance from light pollution. City lights significantly impair the experience, so it is worth choosing a location with a good view of the northern horizon.
- Higher points in northern Hungary: Börzsöny, Mátra, Bükk, and Zemplén are ideal choices. These areas have the lowest light pollution and a clear view to the north.

- Open areas on the Great Plain: The flat terrain of the Great Plain, for example, Hortobágy National Park, Körös-Maros National Park, and Kiskunság National Park, there is a long, unobstructed horizon to the north, which makes it easier to observe the phenomenon.
- Balaton Uplands and Bakony: There are several higher points around the lake with good visibility, and many places in the area have less light pollution.

- Lake Tisza and its surroundings: Spectacular photos of the Aurora Borealis are often taken from the flat and calm areas around Lake Tisza, especially during periods of extremely strong solar activity.
The main reason for the unusually spectacular phenomenon experienced recently is the strengthening of the solar cycle. Between 2024 and 2026, the Sun’s activity will peak, so more powerful solar flares, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and geomagnetic storms are expected. In these cases, the boundary of the Aurora Borealis shifts southward, and thus can occasionally reach Hungary.
