Hungary, Europe, and many other countries around the world are investing heavily in railway development, partly due to economic necessity and partly due to social demand, said the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Construction and Transport (ÉKM) at a press conference in Budapest on Thursday.
At the event, where a strategic cooperation agreement was signed between the University of Dunaújváros (DUE) and MÁV Zrt. (MÁV Group–Hungarian State Railways), Nándor Csepreghy pointed out that the current agreement is a “win-win” situation, as it provides the university with financial support and practical training opportunities, while MÁV gains access to a knowledge base that is essential for the development of transport, as well as future employees for the transport company.

For all these reasons, the ÉKM not only supports this type of cooperation in principle, but also encourages it, said the State Secretary.
Nándor Csepreghy also pointed out that there is much room for improvement in the Hungarian railway system, as the focus of transport development in Hungary in recent years has been on motorways.
He emphasized that there are two important areas of focus for railway development in Hungary: firstly, due to its geographical location, the country lies at the intersection of a corridor that could become a new hub for east-west trade.
He therefore believes that, in addition to road transport, efforts should also focus on strengthening rail freight transport capacity.

As an example, he mentioned that Hungary currently produces around 450-500 thousand cars per year, which have to be transported by rail, but as a result of the investments currently under construction, this number will rise to one million by the end of the decade.
The other target area stems from the growth in passenger transport demand, as the need for mobility has increased significantly both domestically and internationally.
In addition, environmental awareness is becoming increasingly important in this area, all of which requires a great deal of resources and development in terms of both track and rolling stock.

Zsolt Hegyi, CEO of MÁV Zrt., said that nearly 50,000 people work for the MÁV Group every day, with an average age of 47, so replenishment is invaluable for the transport company.
To promote the latter, they are striving to establish strategic cooperation with as many universities as possible, thereby enabling both the universities and MÁV to build a future committed to public transport and sustainability.
At the end of the press conference, the strategic cooperation agreement was signed by Nándor Csepreghy and Zsolt Hegyi, as well as István András, Rector of the University of Dunaújváros, and János Süli, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the University of Dunaújváros.
Fact
Based on a joint statement by ÉKM, MÁV, and the university, starting in 2025, the MÁV Group will offer partnership opportunities to higher education institutions within the framework of strategic cooperation agreements with a view to securing the future supply of professionals in the transport sector. They recalled that there has been cooperation with the University of Dunaújváros since 2015, in which the university provides professional training in dual education. Students enrolled in undergraduate programs in engineering informatics, mechanical engineering, and technical management will become familiar with the MÁV Group’s work processes during their professional training, acquire relevant practical knowledge in their field, and, after completing their training, will be able to join the transport company as employees.
The agreement signed on Thursday covers the creation of a new specialized continuing education program and the development of a new specialization within the mechanical engineering, computer engineering, and technical management programs that fits into the MÁV Zrt. portfolio. The university plans to work with MÁV to develop various student and faculty scholarship programs, as well as to develop and support internship and mentoring programs. The cooperation also extends to research, development, and innovation projects.
