The Tricycle Festival, which promotes cycling, reading, and cultural activities, is returning to Szeged (southern Hungary). The program for this cultural event—which is making its sixth return to the city—kicks off on Friday, the organizers told MTI.
The festival was first held in Szeged in 2021, and the following year, Kanjiža (Magyarkanizsa, Serbia) and Sfântu Gheorghe (Sepsiszentgyörgy, Romania) also joined this unique cycling and literary event. This year’s series kicked off in Magyarkanizsa on May 30 and will conclude in Sepsiszentgyörgy on July 25; in the meantime, in mid-June, the pages of books will be turning at nine venues across Szeged over three days, with bicycles pedaling between—and sometimes during—the events.
Once again this year, the programs in Szeged will be hosted by the city’s most family-friendly community spaces, stretching from the heart of downtown to the banks of the Tisza River.
The festival’s opening ceremony will take place on Friday at the Béla Kövér Puppet Theater, where illustrator and graphic designer Juli Jásdi will present her book “Tintaló”, which explores taboo topics affecting Hungarian society. During the evening, the drawings will step out of the book and come to life in a shadow puppet show.
That evening at No Milk Today, Annamari Oláh—who launched her solo career after performing with the two world music ensembles Fókatelep and Meszecsinka—will give a concert. Her repertoire will include her own compositions as well as Hungarian and international folk songs.
It has become a tradition to organize a literary market on Mars Square on Saturday morning during the festival. This year, invited authors will be signing books at the event’s book stands, thus passersby at one of the city’s liveliest spots can meet Juli Jásdi or Marcsi Tóth, who last year won the Margó Prize for best first collection of prose with her book “Erdő van idebenn” (There’s a Forest Inside), while the publishers Symposion and Csirimojó will be showcasing their books.
In the morning at the Somogyi Library, visitors can take part in a multidisciplinary performance: painter Lóránt Ágoston’s exhibition “In the Forest” will serve as the backdrop for Marcsi Tóth’s reading, while the sounds of the forest will also play a role in the performance by musicians from the Szeged Improvisation Workshop.
Following this, Orsolya Karafiáth will be the festival’s guest. Ákos Tóth will speak with her at lunchtime, discussing, among other things, her new poetry collection “Sehogyse”, to be published this fall.
The Secret Garden will host a family afternoon featuring nature-themed activities for children and a concert by Levente Nemes, as well as discussions of Michael Ende’s story “Momo” and Zsombor Aurél Biró’s novel “My Recurring Dream Is to Wake Up on My Father’s Shoulder”.
On Saturday evening at the Grand Café, the volume “Roaring Time and Other Secrets”, created by 13 writers and poets to celebrate Tamás Kátai’s 50th birthday, will be presented. The discussion will be followed by a concert featuring Gergely Balla and Laci Sallai from the band Platon Karataev.
On Sunday, in the courtyard of the Kék elefánt café, Fórum Fabrika will host a ceramics and graphic arts workshop, while Zsolt Kőszegi, owner of the Néma Papagáj record store, and DJ Celluloid—better known as Csaba Fakan, an active figure in Szeged’s underground scene—will provide the music.
A regular feature of the Tricycle Festival’s program in Szeged is a bike tour that takes participants to important locations in the life of a poet or writer connected to the city. This year, the festival commemorates the 100th anniversary of Éva Janikovszky’s birth, and János Janikovszky, the writer’s son, will also take part in the bike tour.
The closing event of the festival will take place at Sárga Beach, where Péter Zoltán Tóth will talk with Attila Veres and Aurél Zsombor Biró about literature, film, and the relationship between the two on the banks of the Tisza River.
