(NewsNation) — Before Luigi Mangione was accused of gunning down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last year, he had mentioned Thompson’s name while backpacking in Japan and Thailand.
Christian Sacchini, a fellow American whom Mangione befriended in Thailand, told „Banfield“ that Mangione was shocked by how small an amount an MRI scan cost in Thailand.
„I said prices of everything are lower than in the U.S.,“ said Sacchini. „I mentioned I had an MRI for a soccer injury and it cost only $180 with no insurance.“
„That’s when Luigi and my friend started saying U.S. healthcare is messed up. They were talking about CEO’s. Luigi brought up Brian Thompson’s name. Luigi and my friend talked about rich CEO’s in a negative light. They’re greedy, and people get denied coverage despite paying high costs. But Luigi didn’t make any threats.“
Sacchini recalled one conversation he and Mangione had about Sacchini acknowledging his belief his soccer-playing days were dwindling and his interest in pursuing computer science. He said Mangione encouraged him to specialize in artificial intelligence.
Mangione told Sacchini AI was „going to change the world.“
„He was an intelligent, chill dude,“ added Sacchini. „He seemed laid back, relaxed, didn’t drink too much, not violent or aggressive.“
Christian Sacchini’s friend last heard from Luigi Mangione in May 2024
Sacchini revealed after his only meeting with Mangione that he never saw or messaged him again. He added that his friend last heard from Mangione in May 2024, seven months before the murder of Brian Thompson.
„Luigi told my friend he was going to Japan for some zen (peace and quiet),“ he said.
According to the New York Times, Mangione arrived in Japan near Mount Omine in April 2024.
At Mount Omine, Magione sent texts mentioning tests of courage and the longstanding prohibition on women climbers. David Caprara, an American journalist who lived near the mountain, said Mangione would encounter daunting challenges based on which peaks he tried to climb.
Caprara said Mangione’s actions of entering the mountains without proper guidance can be perilous and go against local customs.
Mangione stayed in a guesthouse in Tenanka for six days, where the inn’s owner – Juntaro Mihara – said Mangione didn’t have any digital devices and kept to himself.
“He was quiet, and only had minimum necessary conversations with other guests or he maybe didn’t talk with anyone,“ said Mihara.
Luigi Mangione facing murder charges
Mangione has developed a national following since his arrest, and his legal defense fund has received $1.2 million in donations.
He has been charged with stalking, a firearms offense and murder through the use of a firearm.
Mangione is also facing state charges in New York and Pennsylvania, including first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, two counts of second-degree murder, weapons charges and a count of using a forged instrument. The maximum sentence for the state charges would be life without parole.
