L-R: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, and European Council President António Costa
Viktor Orbán began Friday morning on Kossuth Radio, where he spoke about the dangers of war in Europe, his concerns regarding support for Ukraine, and his upcoming meeting with U.S President Donald Trump. Speaking about the arms race, the prime minister emphasized that it is crucial for Hungary not to get drawn into the conflict.
The Hungarian prime minister pointed out that the world’s major powers are introducing new weapons systems, “we are clearly at the beginning of an arms race, and everyone is talking about increasing military budgets by orders of magnitude.” He disagrees with analyses that compare the situation to the period before World War II. They say, we are where we were in 1938, he noted. “Hitler is advancing, the European superpowers are not stopping him in time, but rather compromising, and these successive small compromises and peace agreements are leading to a powerful Nazi Germany, from which World War II will erupt,” the politician cited those analyses.
The current situation is more like the period before World War I: no one wanted a big war, but in the end, European leaders “stumbled” into a situation from which there was no turning back,
he explained.
@PM_VIktorOrban: Those who support Ukraine, support the war

According to the head of government, European leaders still do not realize that they are playing with fire: decisions—new weapons systems, more money for Ukraine, more soldiers, conscription—could combine into a dangerous mix that could suddenly explode. “Today, Europe is stumbling blindly towards a situation that poses an increasingly imminent threat of war,” he said.
He emphasized that in this situation, it is very important to remain on the side of peace and to announce in advance that we will stay out of all current minor decisions. It is crucial for Hungary’s future that the country has an anti-war and pro-peace government, and that people understand that it is not good to “stumble along with European countries” toward a dangerous situation, he pointed out.
The “Willing Coalition”
In his assessment, the Americans are on the side of peace, and the Russians are also willing to accept peace or a ceasefire under certain conditions, “but the Ukrainians continue to wage a defensive war and do not want to make peace.” He called this understandable but “an extremely unfavorable development,” adding that the Ukrainians cannot accept that they have lost 20-22 percent of their territory, hence they are continuing a war financed by the Europeans.
He emphasized that those who want peace make peace, but today, of the major powers, only the United States wants peace. The most significant obstacle to the American president’s attempts at peace is a group of European countries known as the “Willing Coalition”:
They are willing to send others to war to die, because they are not going yet, they are just arming themselves.”
The member states stand behind the joint EU loan as collateral, and when Brussels sends money to Ukraine, it is always the member states’ money, he pointed out. In the next seven-year budget, over 20 percent of the resources pooled by the member states would be sent to Ukraine, while “we do not have a penny” for this.
The war is blocking the European economy, Viktor Orbán said. “If money goes to weapons, if money goes to Ukraine, if Europeans continue to do what they are doing now, then the European economy cannot gain momentum. Or at most, it can only do so through credit, which is extremely dangerous,” he pointed out.
Washington Meeting
The prime minister said he would travel to Washington with a large delegation for a meeting with Donald Trump on November 7, where a complete review and “facelift” of U.S.-Hungarian relations is planned. Economic leaders, ministers, heads of important state agencies, and the national security advisor will also participate.
Peace will be an important element of the meeting, but the two countries have also been discussing economic issues for many months, thus they will be able to finalize the U.S.-Hungarian economic cooperation package.
He noted that while Americans are bringing their companies home from around the world, American investments are coming to Hungary one after another. These are not “blown in by the wind,” but come here on the basis of agreements, and the economic package also includes “our requests and proposals” for further investments. A prerequisite for this is the resolution of the energy issue: investors need to see how energy prices are developing.
“I have to convince the Americans” that Hungary is a “landlocked country,” we have no sea. This means that “we are at the mercy of energy transport routes,” that are mainly pipelines. He noted that the Germans have a coastline, but are asking for an exemption from U.S. sanctions for one of their refineries, while “they are pulling at our coat-tails to get us to abandon Russian energy.”
