Exhibitions and Commemorations Across Hungary and Transylvania Mark Revolution

Cultural events in Hungary and abroad are marking the anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Among the many programs in Budapest, two exhibitions stand out: Fates on File – A Selection from the Collections of the Institute and Museum of Military History and Accounts of 1956 – Amateur Photographs and Memories. A series of commemorative events in Transylvania will open on Thursday evening with a gala at the Hungarian Opera in Cluj-Napoca.

The Museum of Military History has reopened its doors and launched its first exhibition called Fates on File – A Selection from the Collections of the Institute and Museum of Military History. The exhibition at Buda Castle, opening on October 23, honors the memory of the people and soldiers who fought for freedom in 1956.

The exhibition combines historical artifacts from the period with digital content.

Interactive screens throughout the exhibition space feature spectacular 3D videos of weapons, alongside presentations introducing visitors to the weapons and military technology of the era. VR headsets also allow visitors to explore the T-34/85 and T-54 (T-55) medium tanks in a virtual environment.

Selected photographs and interview excerpts from the collection of the National Széchényi Library (OSZK) illustrate the revolution’s shared significance for Hungarian society. Curators have grouped the material around themes including freedom of the press, solidarity, the destruction and creation of symbols, mourning, and a world turned upside down. The exhibition Accounts of 1956 – Amateur Photographs and Memories is open until January 29, 2027.

Oral history has played an important role in the collective memory of the revolution, particularly after the Kádár regime made discussion of the events taboo.

The short stories shared and the visual documentation of the revolution together paint a picture of how ordinary people and the key figures of the events experienced those two weeks.

The images and interviews with eyewitnesses, participants, and key figures of the revolution have helped preserve personal accounts of 1956. Those interviewed include film director Péter Bacsó, writer Géza Bereményi, politician István Bibó, former president Árpád Göncz, historian Domokos Kosáry, composer Tamás Vásáry, and businessman Péter Zwack.

A total of 158 events are taking place at 73 locations across Transylvania, Partium, and the Banat region, Romania.

In all major cities, participants are marching with torches to local memorials commemorating the events of 1956. In Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár), Hungarian and Romanian historians will take part in a panel discussion on the legacy of the revolution.

The commemorations in Oradea (Nagyvárad) will focus on the revolution’s significance for Transylvania and resistance to communist dictatorship in Romania. The keynote speaker will be László Tőkés, whose name is closely associated with the 1989 uprising in Timișoara.

In Satu Mare (Szatmárnémeti, Sathmar), a history lecture and a commemorative program will be held in the assembly hall of the Reformed College. In Târgu Mureș (Marosvásárhely), film screenings are recalling the atmosphere of 1956.

In Miercurea Ciuc (Csíkszereda), the Hungarian Consulate General has been organizing events for several weeks, primarily aimed at children and young people. A historians’ conference was also held on Tuesday.

In Odorheiu Secuiesc (Székelyudvarhely), a memorial concert will honor Attila Gérecz, a poet and revolutionary who was executed following the 1956 revolution. The program will also feature the folk opera My People, Be Faithful, and I Will Give You Life, written to mark the 130th anniversary of the birth of Bishop Áron Márton. In Sfântu Gheorghe (Sepsiszentgyörgy), films about the events of 1956 will be screened.
