Plans are in place for a new six-lane highway and a railway line linking Budapest and Liszt Ferenc International Airport. The highway is expected to be completed by the end of 2028, while the rail line is scheduled for completion by 2035, Minister of Construction and Transport János Lázár announced at a press conference on Monday at Liszt Ferenc International Airport.
Terminal 3 of the airport is also planned to be completed by 2035, meaning that, together with the road and railway, a development worth 2.5 billion euros will be realized in the capital, the Minister noted. The developments are expected to double the passenger traffic at the airport to 40 million passengers per year by 2035. The airport will be accessible from the city center in 15-20 minutes by rail, the politician said.
He stated that
the aim of the development is to enable Budapest Airport to break away from the competition offered by neighboring countries, and to become the market-leading transport hub in the region.
To this end, he continued, there are plans to build a 27-kilometer, 160-kilometer-per-hour railway line from Kőbánya (10th District) to Monor (a town near Budapest) as part of a one-billion-euro concession investment. This line will not only create a direct connection between the capital and the airport, but will also provide faster access to the Budapest airport from distant cities, such as Nyíregyháza, Szeged, Székesfehérvár, and Győr.
According to his statement, the creation of Terminal 3 at the airport, also with an investment of one billion euros, will double passenger traffic and increase profits. At the same time, the state-owned Budapest Airport is generating more profit than previously estimated, he added.
In addition to the railway and the new terminal, 500 million euros will be used to build a 12-kilometer section of six-lane highway, including access roads, between the outer part of Üllői Street and the airport.
The finalization of the implementation plans is currently underway, which will be handed over to the Ministry in the first half of 2026, and the construction tender can be announced in the second half of the year, with implementation taking two to two and a half years. The route affects 356 properties, 265 of which will have to be expropriated to secure the route, he said.
János Lázár noted that another reason for the investment is the sharp rise in freight traffic through Hungary, driven by the war environment and changing transport conditions. He added that the new railway line is urgently needed for its transport capacity, and its parallel design will allow freight and passenger traffic to run separately.
Responding to questions, the Minister said that the concept had been designed so that the train would also stop at Rákosrendező, in line with the capital’s request, but otherwise the railway development would largely take place on the airport’s own territory, with two to three kilometers of track running underground.
