(NewsNation) — The Republican candidate for Philadelphia district attorney promised Friday to do a full review of the highly publicized Ellen Greenberg case if he’s elected Nov. 4.
Greenberg is the 27-year-old schoolteacher who was found dead in her apartment in 2011 with more than 20 stab wounds. The Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office recently reexamined information in the case and again classified the death, the subject of a Hulu docuseries, as a suicide. The ruling has distressed Ellen’s parents, Josh and Sandee Greenberg, who say authorities continue to make faulty assumptions in the case.
“There are still a ton of questions. We’ve all seen the documentary, we’ve seen people that are saying, ‘What the heck is going on here?’” Patrick Dugan, the Republican candidate for DA, told “CUOMO” on Friday. “For Ellen and her parents, this needs to be looked at again with some fresh eyes.”
Dugan said his review of Greenberg’s death would include talking with a team of “seasoned” homicide prosecutors and detectives to determine whether to reopen the case.
Ellen Greenberg’s parents, who say their daughter’s death was a staged suicide, joined “CUOMO” to respond to Dugan’s promise. Sandee Greenberg said his remarks were “music to our ears” and faulted incumbent DA Larry Krasner for ethical lapses.
Dugan also has issues with the incumbent, calling him soft on crime. He said he’s particularly upset about the recent murder of 23-year-old Kada Scott. The man accused in her death, Keon King, had been charged in an earlier kidnapping case, but the charges were withdrawn when the alleged victim did not show up to a court hearing.
Krasner said his office could have done a better job in the case, including asking for a higher bail for King.
“This is something that’s right at the feet of Larry Krasner,” said Dugan, who likens Krasner to a “co-conspirator” in Scott’s murder.
Dugan is a former judge who unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for DA. After a write-in campaign aided by Republicans, he said he agreed to run under the GOP banner.
“I am urging voters to leave their jerseys at home. We don’t need the red jerseys, the blue jerseys, the green jerseys. We need people to come out and vote for the victims,” he said.
