There was hardly any other option but to hold the American-Russian meeting in Budapest, said the Hungarian Prime Minister on Friday on Radio Kossuth’s ‘Good Morning, Hungary!’ program. Viktor Orbán also mentioned that he would be speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin later that day.
‘I have already spoken with the American President at the peace summit (in Egypt – editor’s note). We are in the process of finalizing the details for an official meeting between Hungary and the US in Washington. Things are boiling everywhere,’ said Viktor Orbán about the current situation.
With regard to the agreed meeting between the American and Russian Presidents, he pointed out that Budapest is currently the only place in Europe where such a meeting could take place, because Hungary has been consistently, openly, vocally, and actively advocating for peace for three years.
The American and Russian Foreign Ministers will try to resolve the outstanding issues within a week, and then the meeting between Trump and Putin could take place in Budapest the following week, said the Prime Minister, adding that he had already given instructions on Thursday evening to set up the organizing committee and that work had begun.

When asked whether the European Union’s pressure on the country could ease after the meeting between Trump and Putin, the head of government replied: “This meeting is not about us. Of course, everyone is excited because it is an important diplomatic event, which we are not only hosting, but which could also lead to peace.
However, it is not about them, but about peace,”
Orbán emphasized.
In the interview, he called for the European Union to also negotiate with the warring parties. ‘The Union should use its own diplomatic channels, as Hungary has done. (…) We were the only European country that said from the outset that war is bad, but that diplomatic channels must not be closed,’ the Prime Minister recalled.
In his view, Europe should not prepare for war, but for peace, because Europe’s biggest problem is war: 180 billion euros have been spent on it, the European economy is stalling, while Europeans are killing each other.

In Orbán’s view, any agreement on peace must abandon European war plans. A European security plan is needed, not because we want to wage war, but so that we can feel safe. The focus of the strategy must be on the peace plan. He added that it is rare in politics for such a rapid turnaround to occur, but why should we not believe that Europeans will take the path of reason, said the PM, expressing his hope.
