MLB Projections for Saturday
When handicapping tonight’s MLB slate, I’m looking at several prominent stars who have compelling statistical trends pointing toward surpassing or falling short of their totals. Here are the player projections we are working with:
| Player | Hits | Strikeouts |
|---|---|---|
| Tarik Skubal | – | 8.5 |
| Jared Jones | – | 4.5 |
| Shohei Ohtani | 0.5 | – |
| Freddie Freeman | 0.5 | – |
| Mookie Betts | 0.5 | – |
| Julio Rodríguez | 0.5 | – |
| Rafael Devers | 0.5 | – |
| Jarren Duran | 0.5 | – |
| Ian Happ | 0.5 | – |
Let’s break down exactly how I’m evaluating these projections to build a winning lineup.
Shohei Ohtani (LAD) Ohtani has been incredibly reliable at home, making the choice to exceed his 0.5 total hits projection a strong consideration. He has recorded at least one hit in 13 of his last 15 home games (an 87.0% hit rate and a 1.33 hits-per-game average). He has also cleared this total in 5 of his last 6 games straight up. I’m confidently adding this to my lineups.
Julio Rodríguez (SEA) Rodríguez is another hitter with data screaming to take higher than his 0.5 hits total. He has recorded a hit in 15 of his last 19 overall games (a 79.0% rate). Even more impressive is his home form: Rodríguez has eclipsed 0.5 hits in 13 of his last 14 games at T-Mobile Park, boasting a massive 93.0% success rate and a 1.1 hits-per-game average.
Rafael Devers (BOS) Devers has a hits projection of 0.5, and the trends point firmly toward surpassing it. He has exceeded 0.5 hits in 6 of his last 7 games, succeeding at an 86.0% rate while averaging exactly 1.0 hits per game over that span. There is nothing better than a reliable bat when chasing a payout.
Jared Jones (PIT) For the starting pitchers, Jones’ 4.5 strikeouts total offers mixed indicators. If you are looking at his overall recent form, the data supports going past the projection, as he has exceeded 4.5 strikeouts in 6 of his last 8 games (75.0% rate). However, if you focus strictly on his road splits, caution is warranted—he has failed to exceed 4.5 strikeouts in 3 of his last 5 games away from home. I might key in on other pitchers tonight.
