Drivers in Howard County, Maryland, are being urged to avoid a bridge in Laurel as workers repair a “puncture” in the concrete.
The Maryland State Highway Administration said that shortly after 9 a.m. on Wednesday, they were notified of a “deck puncture,” which is like a “pothole on the bridge driving surface” in the right lane on southbound I-95 bridge over Stansfield Road.
The bridge is just prior to the Prince George’s County line in Laurel.
Charlie Gischlar, the deputy director of communications for MDOT SHA, said that they closed one lane immediately after finding the puncture, and later shut three lanes for a major concrete repair. Currently there is one lane of I-95 getting by in that area with major delays. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes such as U.S. 29, U.S. 1 or MD-295.
“It’s kind of like a pothole, but it’s on a bridge deck. So with a with a pothole, you have the insulation of the ground underneath. But here you’ve got the rebar that’s showing and it it is a more extensive repair because it involves concrete,” Gischlar said.
He said that they are aiming to reopen the lanes later Wednesday evening or in the early overnight hours, ideally before the morning rush.
“We do have a set of crews out there working feverishly on this,” Gischlar said.
