In October, annual inflation in Hungary remained at 4.3 percent, which is better than expected. Experts believe that the strengthening of the forint, falling food prices, and base effects could lead to a dramatic slowdown from November onwards, bringing the central bank’s 3 percent target within reach by 2026.
According to Dániel Molnár, senior analyst at the Hungarian Economic Development Agency (MGFÜ), inflation was slightly below expectations in October, while stagnating for the fourth month in a row. The monthly price change was practically zero, indicating a stabilization of inflationary processes. Food prices fell by 0.1 percent, slowing annual inflation to 3.9 percent, which is more than a year’s low. The expert emphasized that
the strengthening of the forint exchange rate played a decisive role in the price decline, which cools inflation through imported products.
October is historically characterized by a slight monthly price increase, so the price decline is a positive development, he emphasized. Household energy prices rose by 10.7 percent on an annual basis, but the monthly decline in fuel prices (minus 1.1 percent) and the stability of service prices both contributed to halting the rate of inflation. According to Dániel Molnár believes that there is a realistic chance that inflation will return to the central bank’s tolerance band in December and then temporarily reach the 3 percent target at the beginning of 2026.

Péter Kiss, investment director at Amundi Fund Management, thinks that inflation has now remained above 4 percent for the last time and that a further decline is expected by the end of the year. The indicator reaching the inflation target range may bring the issue of lowering the base rate back on the agenda, which could be one of the main drivers of market expectations in the coming months.
According to the expert, it is crucial for the central bank that, in addition to base effects, the forint exchange rate also remains stable. “The market is not pricing in a significant interest rate cut for the time being, but if the disinflationary process continues, this may change in the next six months,” said Péter Kiss.
Péter Virovácz, senior analyst at ING Bank, pointed out that the 4.3 percent annual inflation and zero monthly change not only fell short of expectations but also represent a favorable development compared to other countries in the region. “While food prices rose unexpectedly in several neighboring countries in October, in Hungary they actually fell, thanks to the strong forint,” he said.
There was no significant change in the prices of durable consumer goods and services, with monthly price changes at a historic low. Although core inflation rose to 4.2 percent, the analyst explained this mainly by
- technical factors
- and last year’s low base
Looking ahead, Péter Virovácz also believes that the main inflation indicator could fall below 4 percent by the end of the year, and that the average rate of inflation could be around 3.6 percent next year. According to the expert, government measures may still influence the economy in the next year or two, but based on current trends, a “persistently low inflation environment” is emerging.
The combination of favorable inflationary trends, declining inflation expectations, and a stable exchange rate could create a macroeconomic environment in which monetary policy also has room to maneuver, all of which points to a further strengthening of the population’s purchasing power.
