  • He reported on the ongoing development of villages, educational and religious institutions, and on the fact that Hungarians in Croatia are playing an increasingly important role in Croatian-Hungarian relations and public life.

Hungarians in Croatia and Croatians in Hungary continue to be strong and indispensable bridges for cooperation between the two countries, Croatian President Zoran Milanovic said on Saturday in Kopács, in the Drava Valley, where he visited the local Hungarian Home together with Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok.

In his welcoming speech, President Milanovic emphasized that it was a particular pleasure for him to welcome those present in Baranya County, a region with counties of almost identical names. He said that this region had been home to Croats and Hungarians for centuries, which was proof of the long and rich shared history of the two peoples.

With Croatian President Zoran Milanovic we discussed opportunities for further strengthening the partnership between our countries.

— Dr. Tamás Sulyok (@DrTamasSulyok) November 14, 2025

He recalled that Croatians and Hungarians had lived together within a common state framework for a significant part of their history. He believed that although there had been periods when cooperation was determined by military or political necessity, its economic and cultural aspects had continued to develop.

Croatians have contributed to the life of Hungary, Hungarians to that of Croatia, and we consider many of our historical figures to be shared,”

he said.

He emphasized that the history of reciprocity did not end in 1918; today, the two countries continue to strengthen their cooperation through numerous intergovernmental and national community relations, both bilaterally and within the framework of the European Union and NATO.

The president also pointed out the role of everyday life: from tourism and economic cooperation to the situation of minorities, whose autonomy, in his view, is primarily cultural but also has political implications. All this is the result of the mutual recognition that the protection of minority rights is an important pillar of relations between the two states and the two nations, he noted.

Zoran Milanovic recalled the Croatian-Hungarian minority protection agreement was signed in 1995 and the work of the intergovernmental joint committee following its implementation. He said that at this year’s meeting of the committee in Zagreb, it was reaffirmed that Hungarians in Croatia and Croats in Hungary enjoy a high level of protection. “In European comparison, we can speak of politically exemplary arrangements,” he emphasized.

He pointed out that

Croatia and Hungary, as old European states and cultures, established their legal and state systems early on, and therefore have a special responsibility to continue developing their relations in the future. “All this is even more significant when we consider our role in connecting Central Europe and the Mediterranean region,”

he said.

In the Croatian president’s view, Croatians in Hungary and Hungarians in Croatia “represent a strong and indestructible bridge” in the cooperation and friendship between Croatia and Hungary. “As with any bridge, we must maintain this bridge built on minority rights,” he said.

In his speech, Róbert Jankovics, president of the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Croatia (HMDK), emphasized that the meetings between the Croatian and Hungarian heads of state are of paramount importance for the national minorities of both countries, especially in the current period. He emphasized that they appreciate the gesture of the presidents taking time out of their official schedules to meet with representatives of the communities.

He said that it is a historic opportunity for Hungarians in Croatia to serve their nation while remaining loyal citizens of Croatia, to which they have proven their loyalty even in difficult times in history. He added that the community has given a lot to Croatia and that their goal is to obtain all the support they are entitled to in the future.

He reported on the ongoing development of villages, educational and religious institutions, and on the fact that Hungarians in Croatia are playing an increasingly important role in Croatian-Hungarian relations and public life.

He thanked Hungary and Croatia for their support and, on behalf of the HMDK, indicated that they would continue to work to remain a reliable bridge between the two countries.
