György Kurtág received the “Personality of the Year” award in February 2025
The 100th birthday of György Kurtág will be celebrated with a festival and a year-long series of events. At the festival organized by the Budapest Music Center (BMC), which will take place from February 15 to 28, international stars and important representatives of the domestic contemporary music scene will present a cross-section of the composer’s life’s work in Budapest’s most important classical concert halls.
Balázs Hankó, Minister of Culture and Innovation, emphasized at the press conference for the series of events on Wednesday in Budapest that the government is securing funding for Kurtág100, thus we can celebrate György Kurtág’s 100th birthday with a worthy series of programs. He explained that the event series would be supported with HUF 342 million (EUR 895,000) and also pointed out that the year-long event series with numerous programs, including film screenings, awaited the audience at venues such as the Palace of Arts (Müpa) and the Academy of Music, as well as in Győr, Szombathely (western Hungary), Pécs, and Szeged (southern Hungary).
György Kurtág is the youngest Hungarian artist, because young is the one who has the courage to transcend the conventions of tradition without denying them, but rather reshaping them while preserving their values,”
said the minister.
László Gőz, director of the BMC, announced that the premiere of the film Kurtág-töredékek (Kurtág Fragments) will take place at Müpa on February 18. On February 19, György Kurtág’s birthday, the audience will be able to hear the cornerstones of his life’s work with the support of Víkingur Ólafsson and István Várdai and the participation of the Danubia Orchestra. The next day, the composer’s new opera, Die Stechardin, will premiere with the participation of Concerto Budapest.
Csaba Káel, general director of Müpa, said of Dénes Nagy’s documentary, which was filmed between 2021 and 2025:
Kurtág Fragments is a beautiful and exciting portrait film that brings György Kurtág closer to the viewer. The premiere at Müpa will be followed by a panel discussion with Víkingur Ólafsson, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Benjamin Appl, and Dénes Nagy.
On February 19, György Kurtág will be welcomed by Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson, who is Müpa’s Artist of the Year this season, will give three concerts, and will also perform at this grand celebration.

The general director recalled that the world premiere of György Kurtág’s one-act opera Fin de partie took place at La Scala in Milan, that it was also performed in Amsterdam, and that the audience at Müpa was able to see a simplified version.
He added that György Kurtág’s chamber opera, a dialogue between him and his wife Márta Kurtág, had now been created. The opera, entitled Die Stechardin, revives an old love story and depicts eternal love. Csaba Káel mentioned that there would also be a photo exhibition at Müpa featuring a selection of portraits of György Kurtág by Andrea Felvégi.
When presenting the festival program, László Gőz explained that Hiromi Kikuchi and Ken Hakii will perform two pieces composed for them at the Academy of Music with the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, György Kurtág Jr. will perform his work composed together with the jubilarian, and Juliane Banse and András Keller will conclude the festival with the Kafka Fragments.
György Kurtág’s most important vocal cycles will also be performed in the concert hall, with Andrea Jőrös, Zsolt Haja, and the UMZE Chamber Ensemble presenting the Achmatova-Pilinszky songs, by poets Anna Achmatova and János Pilinszky, while the SWR Vocal Ensemble’s concert will focus on songs of melancholy and mourning.
In addition to the works of György Kurtág, the festival concerts will also feature pieces by his great predecessors—Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Ludwig van Beethoven, Béla Bartók, and György Ligeti.
The composer’s influence beyond genre boundaries will be demonstrated by concerts given by the Moment’s Notice Trio and the Modern Art Orchestra at the House of Hungarian Music.
The presentation of György Kurtág’s universe will be rounded off by the music history conference and symposium Kurtág Perspectives and the exhibition Signs, Games, Messages organized by the Institute of Musicology.
