Friday evening marked the launch of Budapest’s festive fleet season: public transport operator BKV rolled out six light trams, a brightly decorated cogwheel tram, as well as an illuminated Christmas boat. Meanwhile, the MÁV-VOLÁN Group, coordinating rail and road public passenger transport nationwide, sent off its 60-year-old vehicle as a Light HÉV for its final Advent journeys.
At 5 p.m. on Friday afternoon, the BKV launched its festive light fleet. In addition to the classic Christmas Trams sparkling with lights, the cogwheel tram will also be decorated for the holidays. BKV’s 100-type boat on the Danube is also part of the light fleet, and besides the traditional Santa’s Trolleybus, Santa’s Bus will join the festive vehicles.

After the ceremonial opening on Friday, six Christmas Trams departed from the Hungária depot towards Nagykörút (Grand Boulevard), and at Blaha Lujza Square, they were inserted between trams 4 and 6 and headed towards Újbuda-Központ to make two rounds on tram line 4 between Újbuda-Központ and Széll Kálmán Square. For the first time, all the light trams could be seen at once, on a single line, BKV pointed out in a press release.
On the remaining days of Advent until January 6, each illuminated Christmas Tram will operate on a different line. The light boat will run until December 30, and Santa’s Bus until December 23, writes the announcement.
The light fleet not only offers a spectacular sight and a special travel experience, but also provides an opportunity to support those in need.
In cooperation with Caritas Hungary, the company makes it possible to donate in a modern, fast and easily accessible way for all passengers. The charitable organization’s Advent aid program can be supported via QR codes placed on the vehicles of the festive fleet.

The festive fleet vehicles can be used at normal fares. The timetables for the decorated Christmas vehicles are available here.
At the MÁV-VOLÁN public transport company, the festive season was opened on the HÉV lines (suburban railway system, Budapest) over the weekend. CEO Zsolt Hegyi said that at the beginning of the year, there were still four 60-year-old MIX/A motor trains in the HÉV fleet, three of which have already been withdrawn during the year. Two of them will be transferred to the HÉV nostalgia fleet.
The last one will be symbolically bid farewell as an illuminated Christmas vehicle: during the four weekends of Advent, it will be possible to travel on it “one last time.”
The CEO said in a video post that the retiring HÉV train had traveled nearly 3.5 million kilometers during its career. As the Light HÉV, it is decorated with 880 meters of fairy lights and more than 8,600 LEDs.
The Light HÉV will run in the afternoon and evening hours from November 29-30, on the H5 line; from December 6-7, on the H8/9 line; from December 13-14, on the H6 line; and from December 20-21, on the H7 line.
In its announcement, the public transport company emphasized that from November 30, the trains adorned with lights (Fényszili and FényBz) will run in several parts of the country, appearing on both main and secondary lines. In addition to the trains traveling around the country, one of the Balatonfenyves narrow-gauge railway trains will also be running in festive lights until January 6, 2026.
This year, the 200th anniversary model of the Ikarus 200 series, manufactured in 1993, will be dressed up in festive attire: the Ikarus 280 articulated nostalgia bus, which was renovated and unveiled last year. The vehicle will run from Budapest to Gödöllő on December 6, 7, 13, 14, and 20-23.
From December 6, a CREDO ECONELL 12 bus decorated with festive lights will also be in service on the Budapest-Pilis-Esztergom route.
