Although winter has only recently left Lake Balaton, swimming fever has already taken hold. Registration for the Balaton Swim has begun, and spots are filling up at a rapid pace.
No sooner have the last remnants of ice melted from Lake Balaton than enthusiastic athletes are already planning their summer plunge into the “Hungarian Sea.” As Sonline reports, interest in this year’s 44th Lidl Balaton Swim is enormous.
Over 2,600 participants registered within the first 24 hours, and after just two days, the 5,000-registration mark had already been surpassed.
The huge response shows that the fascination with the classic 5.2-kilometer course has remained undiminished over the decades.
Saturday, July 18, 2026, has been set as the main date for this sporting highlight. However, since Lake Balaton is known for its unpredictable weather, July 19 has already been designated as the first alternate date. Should conditions prevent the race from starting, the organizers have scheduled additional backup dates through early August to ensure that as many participants as possible can take to the water.

Safety is the top priority. The final decision on whether to start the race will be made by experts from the HungaroMet weather service in Siófok in consultation with the water police. Lifeguards and medical personnel will monitor the athletes throughout the entire event.
Registration takes place online as usual.
A registration remains valid for all possible alternate dates. Those who register early also save money. Until June 1, the registration fee is 20,000 forint (54.69 euros); after that, the price increases to 22,000 forint (60.17 euros) until July 15.
In addition to the secured course and chip-based timing, the starter pack also includes the official finisher’s medal and the iconic #megúsztam T-shirt.
The hashtag #megúsztam has become a cult favorite among participants. In Hungarian, the word simply means “I swam it to the end,” but it is also an idiom for “I got away with it” or “I survived it (with minimal harm).” It is a fitting slogan for everyone who has conquered the 5.2 km.

A medical certificate is not required, and participation is at your own risk—nevertheless, the organizers emphasize that thorough preparation is essential for completing the course.
The Balaton Swim is far more than just a competition. It is a communal experience with a charitable purpose. During registration, participants can support the Water Rescue Service (VMSZ), which has been ensuring safety on the lake for 25 years. Additionally, the “The Company Runs” program offers companies the opportunity to strengthen team spirit through a shared sporting experience.
Last year’s results demonstrate that the event brings people from all over the world together.
Participants came from over 1,100 Hungarian municipalities and 51 different nations. While the oldest swimmer was a remarkable 84 years old, nearly one in ten participants is under 18. Some particularly loyal fans have even attended every single event since the premiere in 1979. A sold-out event is also expected for 2026. Anyone who wants to be at the starting line this summer should not delay in registering.
