An oil flare at MOL’s Danube Refinery in Százhalombatta
After a nearly three-month standstill and diplomatic tensions between Kyiv, Budapest, and Bratislava, crude oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline have been resumed.
Hungarian oil and gas company MOL said Wednesday morning, citing information from Ukraine, that repairs to the pipeline have been completed and the force majeure in place since January 27, 2026, was lifted at 6:00 p.m. on April 21, 2026. Ukraine’s pipeline operator, Ukrtransnafta, has since resumed feeding crude oil into the pipeline. On Thursday, MOL confirmed that the first crude oil deliveries via the Druzhba pipeline have arrived in Hungary and Slovakia:
Today, the MOL Group took over crude oil at the Fényeslitke and Budkovce pumping stations. As a result, crude oil deliveries via the Druzhba pipeline system have resumed to Hungary and Slovakia after an interruption of nearly three months,”
they wrote.
The pipeline was reportedly damaged on January 27, 2026, following a Russian drone strike on Ukrainian territory. What began as a technical emergency quickly developed into a geopolitical crisis. While Kyiv cited difficult security conditions as the reason for the lengthy repair work, mistrust grew in Hungary and Slovakia. The dispute escalated into the political arena.
The governments in Budapest and Bratislava accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of using the pipeline as a political lever. In response to the supply halt, both countries blocked a planned €90 billion EU aid package for Ukraine.
The situation was at times critical. The MOL Group turned to the Ministry of Energy in mid-February to request the release of strategic crude reserves in order to maintain regional supply security and to arrange alternative seaborne crude deliveries to its refineries to make up for the shortfall. This was carried out, and part of the strategic reserves was used.
The turning point came on April 21 when Zelenskyy announced the completion of repairs but explicitly tied the restart of operations to the release of the blocked EU funds.
Mediation by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas in Brussels appears to have been effective. Shortly afterward, Slovakia signaled that it would not only approve the EU loans but also the 20th sanctions package against Russia once oil flow resumed.
Slovak Economy Minister Denisa Saková confirmed on her social media page Thursday morning that “after almost three months of interruption, the first Russian oil has arrived in Slovakia. Transport is currently proceeding according to the plan provided by the Ukrainian side.”
Even though the pumps are running again, a bitter aftertaste remains.
MOL CEO Zsolt Hernádi pointed out that since the start of the war there have been dozens of similar incidents, all of which were previously resolved within a few days.
The fact that this time it took almost a quarter of a year highlights how closely the region’s energy infrastructure is now tied to the diplomatic stage.
