In a major boost to Greece’s national goal to tackle climate change, four Greek thermal satellites successfully launched into orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on Sunday. The deployment marks the official activation of the first phase of the National Microsatellite Program, a strategic initiative designed to modernize Greece’s civil protection and wildfire management capabilities.
The satellites have been developed by OroraTech and are specifically engineered to provide near-real-time detection and monitoring of fire outbreaks across the Greek territory. By utilizing advanced thermal sensors, the system allows authorities to identify heat signatures in their very initial stages, track the progression of active blazes, and conduct precise damage assessments following an event.
Greece’s thermal satellites: A new step against the climate crisis
For years, Greece has relied on international cooperation and terrestrial surveillance to manage its summer fire seasons. This launch establishes an independent, dedicated satellite infrastructure that integrates data directly into the Government Earth Observation Hub. This creates a unified operational environment, giving the Greek Fire Service and public authorities the ability to make data-driven decisions during emergencies. Beyond fire detection, the thermal imaging technology offers significant environmental benefits as well. The satellites will provide high-precision data on sea surface temperatures, coastal conditions, and the health of inland water bodies such as lakes and reservoirs.
This information is vital for managing water resources and protecting marine ecosystems from the effects of rising global temperatures. The mission, dubbed “Hellenic Space Dawn,” also included the launch of two experimental microsatellites. These units are the first Greek CubeSat duo dedicated to Earth observation. Their primary role is to validate space technologies developed in Greece, including innovative laser-based optical communication systems. These experimental satellites will support a variety of secondary applications, such as maritime surveillance, with monitoring ship movements and vessel detection.
They will also help Greece obtain sophisticated agricultural oversight, tracking changes in land use and crop health, as well as flood prevention, as they will be monitoring coastal flooding risks in real-time. The project is supported by the Hellenic Space Center (HSC) and the European Space Agency (ESA).
Funding for the initiative was secured through the Recovery and Resilience Fund of the European Union, reflecting Greece’s commitment to utilizing post-pandemic economic resources for long-term climate goals. Following this major step, Greece joins a select group of nations, including the United States, Brazil, Canada, Argentina, and Italy among others, that operate dedicated or sovereign space assets for environmental security.
