  • The request called on the Commission to examine the matter with due regard for European constitutional principles.

  • Fact

President Tamás Sulyok met with the Venice Commission’s Presidential Delegation at Sándor Palace on Thursday to discuss the constitutional dispute that emerged following Hungary’s recent elections.

According to a statement released by the Presidential Office, Tamás Sulyok held talks with Venice Commission President Marta Cartabia, the Commission’s Director and Secretary Simona Granata-Menghini, and Austrian Commission member Christoph Grabenwarter.

On May 29, President Sulyok formally asked the Venice Commission—the Council of Europe’s advisory body on constitutional law—to provide expert assistance in addressing the constitutional issues that arose among Hungarian public law institutions following the elections.

The request called on the Commission to examine the matter with due regard for European constitutional principles.

The Venice Commission responded by indicating it is prepared

to consider the request as a matter of urgency and to gather information on the issue through in-person consultations in Budapest.

In its statement, Presidential Office noted that the President welcomed the Commission’s willingness to assist in resolving the dispute.

“The President of Hungary appreciates the Venice Commission’s commitment to supporting the resolution of the dispute,” the statement said. The presidency also expressed hope that the Commission’s ongoing consultations with the Hungarian government would also “contribute effectively to preserving Hungary’s constitutional order in a manner consistent with European standards.”

Fact

The Venice Commission, formally known as the European Commission for Democracy through Law, is an advisory body of the Council of Europe that provides legal and constitutional expertise to member states on issues relating to democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental rights.

As Hungary Today previously reported, the Hungarian government declined to receive the Venice Commission’s delegation. The Commission had been expected to meet with both President Tamás Sulyok and Prime Minister Péter Magyar in order to clarify the circumstances surrounding the constitutional crisis stemming from the government’s efforts to remove the head of state from office.

Supporters of President Sulyok argue that Péter Magyar’s campaign against President Sulyok is part of a broader attempt to consolidate political power and dismantle the institutional legacy of the previous Orbán government, including discrediting senior officials who served during that period.

The outcome of the Commission’s review could provide an independent legal assessment of the constitutional questions raised by the Hungarian President, although its opinions are advisory rather than legally binding. The consultations in Budapest form part of the Commission’s fact-finding process before it prepares its opinion on the matter.
