While the Association of Independent Gas Stations (FBSZ) is warning of an impending collapse in fuel imports and critical logistical problems, the Ministry of Economy and Energy says Hungary’s supply situation is secure thanks to increased strategic reserves. However, a closer look reveals deep cracks in the system.
Hungary’s fuel market is heading toward a serious crisis. The Association of Independent Gas Stations says purchase prices for imported fuel have surpassed domestic retail prices. The window for economically viable imports is closing.
As Hungary relies heavily on foreign supplies, the association is now sounding the alarm and calling on the government to take immediate action to save the sector.
The situation is being made worse by a series of logistical obstacles. Persistently low water levels on the Danube have disrupted inland waterway transport of diesel. At the same time, major railway reconstruction projects in neighboring countries are causing significant delays in rail transport.
Latest data confirms that strategic diesel reserves fell by 58,800 metric tons between June 30 and July 9 — who benefited from this reduction and why the step was necessary remains completely unclear so far. Several market participants have also reported that wholesalers have begun rationing diesel allocations.
A market environment must be created that ensures the functioning of Hungarian small and medium-sized businesses and guarantees a secure diesel supply. It is not prices that need to be protected, but consumers who are in need,”
the association demanded.
In a statement, the Ministry of Economy and Energy emphasized that the energy security of citizens is its top priority. Thanks to intensive efforts since the end of March, Hungary has once again doubled its strategic reserves compared with their low point in the spring.
The current reserves are sufficient for 87 days, putting them only slightly below the internationally recommended benchmark of 90 days.
The ministry used the opportunity to launch a political attack, stating that the previous government had allowed reserves to fall to a historic low of 44 days.

The reduction in reserves at the time was not a political failure but an emergency measure — something the TISZA government appears to have forgotten. At the time, Ukraine halted oil deliveries from Russia through the Druzhba pipeline, citing a “technical fault.” To maintain the country’s supply, Viktor Orbán’s government had to draw on the reserves. After the change in government, the pipeline suddenly became fully operational again.
Although global armed conflicts are causing oil exports from the two most important oil-producing regions in the world to decline, the ministry insists that there are currently no acute supply problems either in Hungary or in the European Union.
The FBSZ, however, remains skeptical.
It is of little use to increase stocks of other petroleum products if a shortage is emerging specifically in diesel.
The current pricing situation, combined with transport blockages, poses a real and serious risk to the Hungarian economy, the association stated.
