Budapest-based Wizz Air could be planning significant layoffs in Romania. According to an internal document obtained by an online news outlet, a total of 172 employees could be affected.
According to a document obtained by Romanian news outlet APIX.ro, 172 of Wizz Air’s 1,892 employees in Romania could be affected, representing nearly 10 percent of the company’s local workforce. The planned layoffs would affect non-management positions at all four bases involved, primarily among flight crews.
Over 150 pilots and co-pilots and more than 120 cabin crew members are on the list.
The largest number of positions could be eliminated in Craiova, where 47 employees could be placed on the layoff list. In Bucharest, 46 employees could be affected, compared with 44 in Iași and 36 in Cluj. The list includes five captain positions, six first officer positions, six senior cabin attendant positions and 19 cabin crew positions.
The company has established two criteria for selecting employees who could be affected. Performance evaluations would be considered first, particularly the results of the most recent annual review. If that does not establish a clear ranking among employees, length of service within the Wizz Air Group could be used as the deciding factor.
The layoffs are currently scheduled to take place in October and November, with employment contracts ending when the applicable notice periods expire. The Wizz Air trade union has until September 14 to submit its position on the planned layoffs. The final number of employees affected will depend on consultations with employees and the union.
Wizz Air is also preparing for higher fares and capacity cuts, developments that could affect Hungarian travelers as well,
Világgazdaság reports. According to the Hungarian low-cost carrier, persistently high oil and jet fuel prices are likely to put continued cost pressure on the European aviation industry. It remains unclear, however, exactly how these factors will affect airfares in 2027.
The developments lend some support, though do not prove, recent comments by Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary that consolidation could soon take place in the European aviation market. Amid the uncertainty surrounding easyJet, he said the process may already have begun. Although Wizz Air has not made any significant response to the comments, O’Leary has said that Wizz Air itself has become a potential takeover target and that a deal could be completed as early as this year.
Against this backdrop, Wizz Air has also announced plans to take over the entire domestic route network of state-owned Romanian airline Tarom.
