As more teams in the Catholic League shift toward spread offenses, St. Ignatius has stayed true to its triple-option attack under coach Matt Miller.

The Wolfpack missed the IHSA playoffs each of the last two years, but Miller and his program slowly built momentum back with a pair of Prep Bowl championships. Those championships set the table for a resurgent 2026 season. Behind players like Nino Capuano and Reid Hites, St. Ignatius has improved more than arguably any Catholic League team.

“We knew that we were very talented and we could go really far,” Capuano, a sophomore, said. “If you’re looking from an outside perspective as a fan or other teams, I feel like a lot of people doubted us thinking we were going to be the same Ignatius from the past two years.

Playoff-bound for the first time since 2023, St. Ignatius (4-1, 1-0 CCL Orange) has already doubled its regular-season win total from a year ago. The Wolfpack have beaten quality opponents too, defeating defending Class 6A champion Fenwick and Class 7A finalist St. Rita. St. Ignatius joined the Super 25 rankings on Sunday.

St. Ignatius is averaging 39.2 points per game through five weeks, nearly twice its scoring number from last season.

“We’re in a position that I thought we would be,” Miller said. “We expected to be in this spot competing for a division title, so I wouldn’t say it’s a surprise. That’s been the goal of our players. We want to win a state championship regardless of what class we’re in.”

Capuano set a new school record for rushing yards against St. Rita. The 5-7, 180-pounder erupted for 279 yards and three scores in a 42-16 victory.

“My field vision has gotten a lot better,” Capuano said. “I went to a lot of camps to get better at my position. I’ve made a huge all-around jump in running the ball.”

Hites, meanwhile, has captained the St. Ignatius offense since he returned from elbow surgery late in his sophomore year. The junior quarterback accounted for six touchdowns in only 8.5 quarters of work over the team’s first three games this year.

Hites’ older brother Connor is a key factor on the Wolfpack defense at safety. He intercepted two passes, made two sacks and totaled 10 tackles against Hope Academy. He then helped contain Iowa recruit Jake Thies in the 30-20 win over Fenwick, recording 12 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble.

St. Ignatius’ only loss came against unbeaten IC Catholic and the Wolfpack has allowed just 64 points in five games. The win over Fenwick was St. Ignatius’s first divisional victory since 2023, when the Wolfpack won the Green with a 3-0 mark.

“Our connection this year is a lot stronger than it’s been in years past,” Reid Hites said. “Our goals are a lot bigger and I feel like we had a different mentality going into the season. We don’t want to be overlooked anymore and I feel like our work has paid off so far…With the Fenwick game and the Rita game, we went into those games overlooked, but from within, everyone on the team knew we could win those games. That was the ultimate goal and we did that.”

Read more high school football coverage at Friday Night Drive.
