A former principal is being accused of misusing school funds in Fairfax County, Virginia.
Fairfax County police said Wednesday that 51-year-old Darin Thompson, of Lorton, Virginia, a former principal at Hayfield Secondary School, was arrested after it was determined that he used almost $8,000 in school funds for “unauthorized personal expenses.”
Detectives launched an investigation on April 21 after receiving information from the Fairfax County Public Schools Office of the Auditor General that an employee was fraudulently using a school-issued payment card for unauthorized expenses, such as personal travel and attendance at events that were not related to their work, according to police.
An arrest warrant was obtained for Thompson, who turned himself in Wednesday at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. He was released on a $3,000 unsecured bond.
He is being charged with felony embezzlement.
Thompson has been with the school system since July 2023 but was placed on administrative leave after the allegations came to light. He was suspended Wednesday.
Thompson’s arrest comes after the recent arrest of another Hayfield Secondary School employee, Stephanie Gale, a former finance technician at the school, who was arrested in connection with allegedly embezzling more than $40,000.
Fairfax County School Board member Mateo Dunne, who represents the Mount Vernon District, called for an overhaul of the school system’s financial controls in response to the arrests Thursday.
“We must be relentless in our fight against corruption. It is a cancer that must be eradicated root and branch. These arrests show that our existing processes and systems are inadequate, so we must institute new financial controls to detect and prevent fraud, waste, and abuse,” Dunne said in a news release.
