Sergeant Nóra Böröcz has become the first Hungarian female soldier to successfully complete the U.S. Marine Corps Drill Instructor School. In an interview with honvedelem.hu, the instructor of the 1st “vitéz Reviczky László” Territorial Defense Regiment spoke about the reality behind the myth of the screaming drill instructor, mental toughness, and the leadership principles she is bringing back to the Hungarian Defense Forces.
The image is ubiquitous in Hollywood classics such as Full Metal Jacket: the relentless drill instructor who seems to do nothing but yell. The reality at the storied Parris Island base, however, is far more thoughtful and professional, Nóra Böröcz emphasized.

Behind the extreme volume, time pressure, and toughness lies a meticulously planned and highly regulated training system. Its stated goal is to turn civilians into combat-ready Marines within 13 weeks. Every action and every exercise has a specific purpose and is based on decades of experience.
The Hungarian soldier was particularly impressed by the dedication of her U.S. counterparts, who maintained this standard every day with undiminished intensity from 3:30 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
The curriculum demanded everything from the participants. At its core were the so-called “drills”—leading platoons and issuing commands with precision, practiced both in leadership and subordinate roles. The theoretical training was complemented by four days embedded in the day-to-day life of an operational company, as well as demanding physical tests:
- Extreme physical challenges: Numerous obstacle courses and confidence courses.
- Water survival: A central focus of the Marine Corps. Böröcz completed this discipline as the top performer in her group.
- Comprehensive training: Drill and ceremony, weapons handling, tactics, military history, and dedicated leadership training.

In addition to the physical challenge—compounded by the scorching heat and oppressive humidity of South Carolina—the biggest challenge was adapting to an unfamiliar military system. As an international participant, Böröcz initially struggled with feelings of being an impostor, surrounded by unwritten rules and routines that had become second nature to her U.S. counterparts.
According to the Hungarian soldier, two guiding principles shaped this period:
- “Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable” – the ability to remain calm and effective in persistently uncomfortable situations.
- “Embrace the suck” – rather than avoiding hardship, accepting it as an essential driver of personal development.

The extremely high standards are reflected in the numbers. Of the 46 soldiers who began the course, 24 successfully completed it, even though all participants had already undergone physical and mental selection beforehand.
For Sergeant Böröcz, her gender was never the focus; she said she faced the challenges first and foremost as a soldier.
Although the conditions at Parris Island—with around 15,000 recruits trained there each year and infrastructure designed specifically for that purpose—cannot be transferred directly to Hungary, she plans to incorporate three key principles into her own training routine:
- Consistent adherence to standards: Following the principle “Do it right, or do it again,” basic skills are repeated until they can be performed flawlessly.
- Leading by example: The highest standards can be demanded of subordinates only when instructors embody those same standards themselves.
- Immediate feedback: Fast, precise corrections immediately after an action significantly accelerate the learning process.

Her advice to soldiers seeking similar international challenges is pragmatic. Thorough preparation at home is essential, but once on site, what matters most is having the courage to ask questions, accepting mistakes as part of the learning process, and consciously recognizing small personal successes. The most important lesson for the Hungarian soldier is that the goal is not to avoid uncomfortable situations, but to learn how to handle them with confidence.
