Hungary’s National Ambulance Service (OMSZ) has completed a comprehensive modernization program. With nearly 20 billion forints (55 million euros) in EU funding, the organization has upgraded its infrastructure and equipment, the ambulance service announced on social media.
The project focused primarily on modernizing medical equipment. A total of 256 new ambulances have been put into service. The upgrades also include 572 advanced defibrillators with integrated multiparameter ECG monitors and accessories, 234 Doppler devices, 166 standalone ECG machines, as well as other medical equipment and IT infrastructure.
The new equipment is expected to help make prehospital emergency care faster, safer, and higher in quality.
Alongside the completion of the investment program, the OMSZ is continuing its transparency initiative announced in late summer. Since September, the organization has been publishing detailed monthly figures on response times and call volumes on a dedicated online platform.
The data is based on a new calculation method that measures the time from receipt of a 911-equivalent emergency call (112) to the arrival of ambulance crews at the scene. Direct comparisons with older statistics are therefore not possible, as those figures often measured response times only from the moment the ambulance station was alerted.
The latest figures for September present a mixed picture:
- Total call volume (P1–P4): The service recorded 84,963 calls nationwide across priority levels P1 to P4, including 15,903 in Budapest. Compared with August, the number of calls fell 11% nationwide and 5.8% in Budapest, although it remained above the level recorded a year earlier.
- Most critical emergencies (P1): A total of 10,638 calls nationwide were classified as the highest priority. Ambulance crews arrived within 20.10 minutes in 75% of these cases.
In 90% of life-threatening emergencies, paramedics reached the scene within 25.75 minutes. Despite a slight improvement compared with August, the service has yet to meet its own target. In the longer term, it aims to ensure that ambulance crews reach 90% of P1 emergencies within 15 minutes of receiving the emergency call.
Regional figures for September varied. Western Transdanubia recorded the shortest response time nationwide, with crews arriving within 23.16 minutes in 90% of cases. Central Hungary had the longest response time, at 27.75 minutes. Budapest presented a mixed picture. The response time for 75% of calls improved slightly to 19.84 minutes, while the time for crews to reach 90% of incidents increased to 24.89 minutes.
The ambulance service stressed that
response time is an important logistical indicator, but on its own it does not provide a complete picture of the quality of treatment and care.
The organization said it would publish the data in full every month to track progress transparently and document areas where further improvements are needed.
