Although drought posed a serious threat to Hungarian agriculture again this year, measures to mitigate drought damage ultimately reduced crop losses significantly, said the state secretary for agriculture on Thursday in Budapest. At a press conference following the meeting of the Harvest Coordination Committee, Imre Hubai stated that, based on harvest data, the amount of crops needed for domestic supply is available, and there is also a surplus for export.
The state secretary said that drought protection and water retention measures, precipitation conservation, and the promotion of less intensive soil cultivation all contributed to Hungarian agriculture being much less affected by the summer weather than during the drought of 2022.
Drought damage now affected only about one-third of the area of that time, with reports coming in for 556,000 hectares.
The drought mainly affected sunflower, corn, and soybean crops, but the water sector helped retain over 1 billion cubic meters of water, and the total cost of mitigating the effects of the drought exceeded HUF 20 billion (EUR 51.8 million). Of this, HUF 4.7 billion (EUR 12 million) was spent on immediate drought protection measures, and in addition, the government assumed more than HUF 10 billion (EUR 25.9 million) of the water supply costs borne by farmers.
The state secretary reported that
the area under corn cultivation had fallen from around 1 million hectares to 750,000 hectares, but despite this, producers were able to harvest 1 million tons more than three years ago, almost 3.8 million tons.
The area under sunflower cultivation has increased and is expected to be even larger next year, as it still yields more reliably than corn, with this year’s harvest expected to be around 1.2 million tons.
He added that autumn sowing is going well and that rainfall may help germination. Demand for grain is not expected to change significantly next year, but producers can expect stable yields.
Tamás Petőházi, president of the Grain Producers’ Association (GOSZ), believes that farmers may face another difficult year, but Hungarian agriculture has “taken up the gauntlet” and is considering significant changes in response to the unfavorable developments. At the press conference, he pointed out that one solution could be to change the crop structure, with the decline in corn cultivation opening up 200-300 thousand hectares for the cultivation of other autumn crops.
HungaroMet published its latest agrometeorological analysis on Thursday. The Hungarian meteorological service writes that
although the top meter of soil remains critically dry in most of the Great Plain and autumn crops are still unable to find moisture, significant rainfall is expected at the end of the week, that may improve the situation.
There have been two waves of precipitation in the past week, with 20-30 millimeters falling in western areas, but rainfall typically remaining below 2 millimeters east of the Danube, reads the analysis. The 30-day precipitation total only exceeds the average on the western border. In most of the country, there is a huge shortfall in the 90-day precipitation total, with the deficit exceeding 100 millimeters in some southern areas, and only in the northern part of the country are there patches where rainfall has been roughly equal to or greater than the long-term average. The top 50-60 centimeters of soil in Transdanubia and the north contain sufficient moisture, but in large areas of the Great Plain, the top meter of soil remains critically dry.
According to the forecast, the weather will change over the weekend, with rain expected in several waves from Friday evening to Tuesday, and overall precipitation exceeding 10 millimeters expected over a large area, with more rain expected in the eastern and southeastern parts of the country this time. Temperatures will remain above average, with daily temperature fluctuations decreasing due to cloudy weather.
