The section of the M30 motorway between Miskolc and Szikszó on May 9, 2025
The restoration work on the M30 motorway between Miskolc and Szikszó (northeastern Hungary), which has been ongoing for months, is nearing completion. The road surface is currently being rebuilt on the affected, subsided section, and it is expected that the route will be reopened to traffic within a few weeks.
All parties involved are working intensively to get the important section of the M30 between Miskolc and Szikszó back into operation as quickly as possible, according to a video posted on Sunday by Member of Parliament Katalin Csöbör. She reported that the restoration of the motorway is nearing completion and that construction of the road surface has begun.
The work is expected to be completed by December 15, after which the closed section will be reopened to traffic.

As we reported, the 57-kilometer section of the M30 via Miskolc towards Košice (Kassa in Slovakia) and the Slovakian border was opened in 2021 with a budget of 180 billion forints (467 million euros). However, part of the route between Miskolc and Szikszó had to be closed at the end of February 2024, just two and a half years after it was opened, because the road had slipped over a length of 150 meters. Since then, traffic in this area has only been routed via detours.
The Austrian company Strabag, which is carrying out the work, began repairing the M30 in February this year, at an estimated cost of 4 to 5 billion forints (10-13 million euros). Although the Minister of Construction and Transport, János Lázár, had given the company a deadline of the end of October to complete the section in February, this deadline was not met.
The minister stated that the subsidence of the M30 was clearly due to errors made by Strabag and that the Austrian company was stalling the Hungarian government. Strabag, on the other hand, argues that the damage was caused by unpredictable groundwater movements that became apparent after technical acceptance and could not have been foreseen. This groundwater saturated the deep clay layers under the dam, leading to a landslide and uneven settlement, the company explained.
A week ago, Strabag announced that the expert’s report now allowed the construction of the road structure to proceed with the restoration of the northern section of the M30. Nevertheless, further improvements to the soil condition and groundwater pressure were necessary in order to be able to safely open the route. The company emphasized that the soil had to be further compacted and the internal water pressure had to fall below the safety level, with this process continuing during the construction of the road structure.
János Lázár imposed tough conditions on Strabag after the Parliament’s Economic Committee discussed the draft law he had introduced to amend public procurement law.
The minister made it clear that the Austrian construction company could remain in Hungary, but that there would be severe consequences if mistakes were repeated.

In line with his earlier promise, the Minister of Construction and Transport submitted his proposal to amend the Public Procurement Act on November 4. The aim is to exclude commercial enterprises and their affiliated companies that seriously breach contracts for state construction investments and fail to meet their warranty obligations from acting as main contractors, subcontractors, or resource providers.
János Lázár emphasized that Strabag and other companies would remain, but that they would have to “play by the rules.” He made this statement after the Economic Committee had discussed the amendment to the law proposed by the minister. This amendment is to apply to ongoing public procurement procedures and stipulate that only companies that continuously fulfill their warranty obligations may participate in state construction projects.
The most important rule of the game is that anyone working for the state must deliver excellent technical quality at an affordable price, the minister said on his social media page. He added that the consequences of technical quality deficiencies must be borne.
Those who perform poorly and do not correct mistakes will be excluded from public tenders, and neither Strabag nor other companies will be allowed to make more than ten percent profit.
János Lázár summarized that they are currently fighting with both Strabag, which botched the M30 and refused to repair it on time, and the Hungarian company V-híd, which refuses to accept the ten-percent profit cap. According to the minister, the most important thing is whether the company is foreign or Hungarian and whether the service is good and affordable.
