After a century, the family of the last Austrian emperor has announced plans to publicly display their personal jewelry, a collection that had been considered lost for decades, as published on the Habsburg Heritage website. This news caused a stir in Austria, and Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler (SPÖ) called for an investigation into whether the diamonds could be returned to Austria.
A statement on the Habsburg Heritage website reported that members of the Habsburg family, one of the most influential and enduring dynasties in European history, managed to save important pieces of the family’s private jewelry while fleeing persecution by the Nazi regime at the beginning of World War II, bringing them to safety in Quebec, Canada, in 1940. The pieces have been kept in that country ever since.
In recognition of the cultural and historical significance of the jewelry, the direct descendants of the imperial family have decided to make the pieces accessible to the world.
The items have been carefully preserved over the years and are in the same condition in which they were brought to Canada in 1940. The authenticity of the jewelry has been verified and certified by an independent expert. Among the jewelry is the Florentine Diamond, one of the largest gemstones in the world.
The head of the Habsburg family, Karl von Habsburg, grandson of Emperor Karl I (1887-1922) and the Austrian Empress and Hungarian Queen Zita (1892-1989), said in a statement on behalf of the family:
As descendants of Emperor Karl I and Empress Zita, we are very proud and honored to make our culturally and historically significant private jewelry collection available to the public. We would like to express our gratitude to the people of Canada, who offered our family a safe haven in 1940 and protected them from extremely difficult circumstances.
Out of gratitude to this country and its people, we are delighted to exhibit the preserved family jewels in Canada, where they have found a new home.”
As several newspapers reported, Vice-Chancellor Andreas Babler (SPÖ – Social Democratic Party of Austria) has announced an investigation to examine whether the Florentine Diamond, which is also connected to Hungary through its origin from Queen Zita (Zita of Bourbon-Parma), could be transferred to Austria. “If it turns out that the Florentine Diamond is the property of the Republic of Austria, I will initiate the process of recovering the jewel. My office is already in contact with the Austrian Embassy in Canada in this regard,” Der Standard quoted the politician as saying.

Karl Habsburg-Lothringen, grandson of Emperor Karl I and current head of the House of Habsburg, has so far remained calm and told Austrian radio that he and his family are having the matter thoroughly examined from a legal perspective by both historical and legal experts. In his view, these expert opinions clearly state that the property is purely private and that the Republic has no claim to these items, commented Karl Habsburg-Lothringen.
