Hungarian Carly’s has triumphed for the second time at one of the most prestigious competitions in the international beverage industry. At the World Drinks Awards gala in London, the family-run company’s Aperitivo drink won the title of “World’s Best Wine-Based Cocktail.” The team from Zamárdi (Lake Balaton area) reached the top last year with its Gin Tonic product, wrote 24.hu.
The World Drinks Awards is one of the most renowned professional competition series in the global beverage market, selecting and honoring the world’s highest-quality alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages with the most outstanding designs every year since its launch in 2007. This year’s winners were announced at a gala held on June 2 at the Waldorf Hotel in London. Nearly 5,000 beverages from more than 60 countries competed in the global competition.
At the event organized by Paragraph Publishing, based on the decision of a jury of international experts, the Hungarian Aperitivo Spritz not only won gold in its category, but was also selected from among the shortlisted finalists as the world’s best in the World’s Best Premix Wine Cocktail category.
The Hungarian company became a “back-to-back” world champion, as it also stood on the top step of the podium last year with a different product. This feat is considered a rarity on an international level in the Premix category. Since 2015, only three companies have managed to win the world championship title in consecutive years with different products.
The Carly’s brand was launched just three years ago and has since earned a total of 18 international professional accolades, including two “World’s Best” titles in consecutive years.
For 20 years, the family business focused exclusively on distilling pálinka. The turning point in the company’s history came with the closure of restaurants and bars during the pandemic, when the owner couple—based on the wife’s creative idea—shifted toward boxed, ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages. The project also proved successful on the TV show Shark Tank, where they found an investor in Albert Sárospataki, which gave new momentum to their development efforts.
In 2025, the company’s products won two gold and two silver medals at the Berlin International Spirit Competition, and three gold and one silver medal at the World Drinks Awards; this year, their beverages have already been honored with eight awards. In addition to their London triumph, they also won two silver and two bronze medals at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC).
We do not have a standard recipe; we keep working and creating until our sense of quality tells us: this is it,”
said Zsolt Beliczay, co-founder of Carly’s.
Aperitivo is the result of months of experimentation, during which, after countless tastings and research, they found the winery that provides the perfect base. The product is made exclusively with natural flavors and reduced sugar content, targeting the quality-conscious Gen Z.
Although the premium RTD category is still considered a developing market in Hungary, the brand’s founders are confident that international achievements will further strengthen the brand’s domestic presence.
Winning the World’s Best title two years in a row, along with nearly twenty international industry accolades, demonstrates that a Hungarian brand is capable of reaching the global forefront. We are confident that these results will reinforce Carly’s quality and uniqueness for both domestic consumers and our retail partners,
Beliczay said.
“In fact, we will not be slowing down in 2027 either. After two consecutive “World’s Best” titles, we will be competing in the world’s largest North American professional competitions in 2027. It remains to be seen how successful a Hungarian brand from Zamárdi can be overseas, but we are optimistic, since a few years ago we would not have thought we could be among the world’s best for two consecutive years,” added co-founder Bianka Czomba.
The winning Aperitivo Spritz will appear on store shelves nationwide in the coming weeks.
A few years ago, Lake Balaton’s popular drink took the world by storm, and a Balaton wine also won a gold medal at the world championships.
