With the 2026 summer travel season just around the corner, many people simply grab their backpacks, book a flight, and head straight to the beach. However, the ease of crossing borders is not a given. While the world is open to citizens of some nations, others must wait for weeks outside consulates, providing voluminous documentation to prove their identity and financial status. For Hungarian travelers, the strength of their passport offers a major advantage in 2026, placing Hungary among the world’s most mobile nations and allowing citizens to explore much of the globe with fewer visa barriers.
Based on the latest data from the Passport Index, which measures global passport mobility, the Hungarian passport ranks among the world’s strongest, placing fifth overall. The United Arab Emirates holds the top position, while Spain and France share second place. Several countries are tied for third place due to identical mobility scores, Index reported.

It is important to understand that multiple countries may share the same ranking in the list.
Although the Hungarian passport ranks 5th, several other countries—Poland, Malta, Croatia, Latvia and South Korea—are also ranked in the same position based on their scores.
Other international passport rankings may place Hungary even higher. For example, The Guardian’s 2026 ranking lists Hungary in fourth place due to differences in methodology and scoring.

The Hungarian passport provides outstanding global mobility: Hungarians can enter most countries in the world without having to go through a prior, bureaucratic visa application process.
A passport’s ranking is determined by what is known as a mobility score.

The criteria for compiling the country list are as follows: the ranking measures how many destinations the holder of a given passport can enter using one of the following four simplified methods:
Visa-free: Entry without any prior authorization or fees.
Visa on arrival: The visa is issued immediately at the destination country’s border or airport.
Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA): A digital pre-travel authorization system used by some countries, including the UK and similar to the United States’ ESTA system.
With an expedited e-visa: A digital visa that can be applied for online, with no red tape.
The more countries a person can visit using these methods—without having to visit a consulate in person—the higher the passport’s mobility score.
Over the past decade, mobility has increased in most countries, and for this very reason, it may seem at first glance as if the world is becoming more open.
People believe that the walls being built along borders are getting higher as the far right gains ground in governments around the world. Statistics, however, show that more and more countries are signing visa-waiver agreements with one another,”
noted Armand Arton, head of Passport Index. Small island nations have seen notable improvements, partly because they are often perceived as lower-risk travel partners. China has also significantly improved its standing through bilateral agreements.
However, the most significant step forward is the visa-free agreement with the Schengen Area, which comprises 29 European countries. As a result, Georgia, Ukraine, and Kosovo have also moved up the list.
