The European Commission in Brussels
In a recent X post, U.S. Deputy State Secretary Christopher Landau has revealed that despite the rhetoric, way more money flows to Russian state coffers from EU member-states than aid to Ukraine. Although Hungary is often singled out as having a controversial approach to energy purchasing, the truth is way more complex, and way more inconvenient for some of Viktor Orbán’s staunchest critics.
In connection with my trip to Europe this week, I asked the @StateDept whether the nations of Europe had provided more money to (a) Russia or (b) Ukraine between the invasion in February 2022 and President Trump’s return to office in January 2025. I was surprised that the answer… pic.twitter.com/fZZuyL2rNU

I knew many of these countries had tied their energy fortunes to Russia, but I had no idea of the extent of it, or how (collectively) it dwarfed their aid to Ukraine”,

Some have since questioned the accuracy and completeness of the chart, as one commenter noted that “the chart ignores the financial aid provided through the EU and the monetary value of weapons that have been provided”. Another commenter, Dainius Kreivys ,wrote – “From 2020 to 2024, I served as the Minister of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania, and I can assure you that the data you provided are not accurate. Since 1 April 2022, Lithuania has not spent a single euro on energy resources imported from Russia”.
Looking at the Hungarian section of the State Department’s chart, the sums outgoing towards Russian energy resources are roughly in the ballpark of what the government has declared as expenses on oil and gas. It, however, ignores the historic record aid that the Orbán government has offered to Ukraine and Ukrainians, either in food, medical and humanitarian aid, or by looking after refugees passing through Hungary, and especially the tend of thousands, who have decided to stay. Nevertheless the chart is an enormous embarrassment to other EU leaders and bureaucrats who have ostracized Hungary for not showing solidarity with Ukraine, while also “greasing” the Russian war-machine with oil and gas purchases.
The chart includes non-EU countries, such as Turkiye and the UK, showing that one of the staunchest advocates of a military solution in Ukraine, the British government, has purchased billions worth of energy carriers from Russia since the 2022 invasion, despite being a member of the so called “coalition of the willing.” Turkiye, on the other hand, played it both ways, selling weapons and defense technology to Kyiv, while being the largest importer of Russian oil and gas at the same time.
Yet the U.S. State Department’s chart also unmasks the hypocrisy of EU member-states, whose past communications has created an impression that they have weaned themselves off cheap Russian oil and gas in solidarity with embattled Ukraine. According to the data, Italy and the Netherlands have both surpassed Hungary in Russian energy imports, while Germany and France have both only been marginally behind. Our Visegrad 4 friends, Poland and Czechia have also paid their fair share with cc. 13 billion and 15 billion USD respectively, while Slovakia has imported more energy per capita than Hungary. All three were lead by leftist governments at the time, regularly diverting attention from their own Russian energy purchases by singling out the Hungarian government for openly refusing to budge on supplying its industry and consumers with relatively cheap Russian energy imports.
While the debate about purchasing Russian oil and gas in view of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could be deemed an entirely legitimate one, the gaslighting and hypocrisy of European leaders is unprecedented. Hungary has been declared a pariah country for its open and unapologetic purchase of Russian oil, and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was almost unequivocally labelled by Western media as one subservient to the Kremlin’s interests. All the while, Hungary is not even the top purchaser of these resources neither in an absolute, nor in a per capita sense in Europe. This pretty much leaves us with only one plausible conclusion: the entire fake Russian energy purchase outrage is only an instrument of political manipulation, part of the European campaign of blackmail against the government of Viktor Orbán. And while the government in Budapest has proved itself resilient enough in fending off such attacks, European voters are lulled into a false sense of moral superiority and coaxed into voting back those who offer them an undeserved, yet cheap sense of solidarity.
