Mária Schmidt
By the end of July, numerous nonprofit asset management foundations with a public mandate (abbreviated in Hungarian as KEKVA) had been dissolved, including the Foundation for Research on Central and Eastern European History and Society (KKETTK), led by Mária Schmidt, a close associate of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Shortly after its founding in 2000, the KKETTK acquired the building that had previously served as the headquarters of the Arrow Cross Party and later of the communist political police ÁVH and ÁVO, and in 2002 established the “House of Terror” Museum there, with Mária Schmidt serving as its director general.
Today, the “House of Terror” Museum is one of Budapest’s best-known museums and a major attraction for visitors interested in Hungary’s turbulent 20th-century history.

It has become a prominent site of remembrance for the victims of both Nazi and communist dictatorships and attracts visitors from Hungary and abroad.
Its distinctive exhibitions have made it one of the country’s most recognizable historical museums.
According to Telex, a left-wing news portal with ties to TISZA, “real estate millionaire” Mária Schmidt has been working for two decades to “align” 20th-century Hungarian and Central European history—particularly the history of communism and the transition to democracy—with the FIDESZ narrative. It is therefore hardly surprising that the dissolution of Mária Schmidt’s entire network of institutes sparked wild celebrations in the left-wing camp.
Political activists, who have been seeking revenge since 2010, are openly reveling in their delight.
According to Telex, the relationship between Mária Schmidt and FIDESZ was not always smooth; “In early 2007, for example, she was accused of conspiring with János Áder against Viktor Orbán,” the left-wing website claims. Eventually, she gradually moved closer to the government again after 2010, the portal reported.
After 2010, the KKETTK developed into a genuine network of institutes, led by the Institute of the 20th Century and Institute of the 21st Century. The former had a more historical focus, while the latter functioned as an analysis center.
The KKETTK is leaving behind to the state a museum, literary estates, villas in Buda, and buildings in downtown Budapest. However, even the government does not yet know exactly what will become of the infrastructure built up by Mária Schmidt. The Ministry of Social Relations and Culture, headed by Zoltán Tarr and the legal successor to the foundation, would have to decide on its future.
Mária Schmidt had previously told Mandiner:
I am waiting until they fire me. Until then, I am not going anywhere; I have no reason to.”
Fact
In left-wing circles both at home and abroad, the historian—who is labeled the “ideologue of FIDESZ”—is regarded as a “heretic.” For example, she argues that Nazism and communism are comparable: “In Hungary, no one doubts that these totalitarian regimes are comparable; we have firsthand experience of both dictatorships and know what we are talking about.” Equally a thorn in the side of leftists and “do-gooders” is her statement: “The Germans have already decided once before who we are not allowed to live with (referring to Jewish fellow citizens—Ed.), and now they want to decide who we must live with.” She was referring to the political pressure aimed at forcing Hungary to adopt the disastrous German-style migration policy. Whatever the leftist Bálint Ruff and the former theologian Zoltán Tarr—the two ideologues of Péter Magyar—may decide regarding the intellectual legacy of Mária Schmidt, one thing is certain: Nothing in the future is to remind us that Hungary was once the “promised land” of the global conservative public. There is much to suggest that a “damnatio memoriae” (condemnation of memory) will take place in this country. There is no doubt about the backing from Brussels. The generously sponsored activists are allowed to complete their work of destruction and take revenge for their alleged marginalization during the Orbán era. The new autocracy tolerates no critical counter-public sphere.
