The new bread celebrated during our August 20 national holiday.
It is becoming ever more evident that most of our Hungarian readers now long for something other than the cacophony of activism, propaganda, and insults of the past few months, years. A message that is more timeless, something that rises above all of this. Our nation is seeking a foundation just like the one King Saint Stephen left behind—one on which Hungarians can rediscover one another again. A foundation on which members of the same nation do not see one another as rivals, but recognize the other as a fellow pilgrim hungry for peace and acceptance just like themselves. One on which we are able to rediscover our individual and collective national dignity. What else could this foundation possibly be but the Word of God? Or, as our King Stephen put it, “the counsel of divine wisdom.”
August 20 marks both the founding of the Hungarian state and the Feast of the New Bread. Let us share a few thoughts here about the latter. One of our favorite biblical stories is that of the manna, from the Book of Exodus. As the Hebrews wandered through the desert, Moses brought their complaint before God, and the Lord promised to provide them with bread from heaven so that they would not die of hunger.
Without a doubt, the story about food falling from heaven is one of children’s favorite stories from the Bible. It moves their young imagination: how wonderful it would be if we did not have to struggle or work, if manna—food—would simply fall from the sky forever. Yet if anyone were to look at affluent Western welfare societies today—or even our own—they would understand that such a situation would, in fact, be the greatest curse that God could visit on us. Our recent history clearly shows us, that where there is no struggle, no work, where people do not know danger or an amount of deprivation, certain degenerative social processes will inevitably develop, resulting in communities losing their survival instincts on a collective level and becoming completely defenseless against internal and external attacks.

It is evident that this biblical metaphor is not meant to instill an idea of a workless life in anyone; it is not about a kind of “permanent heavenly social system”. What it is actually about can be found in the passage that makes all of this so relevant on our national holiday. The Bible says, “Some people saved some of the manna for the next day, but it became infested with worms and stank.” It is from this very passage that one realizes the story of the manna in the desert is actually a metaphor for truth.
A Christian understand that Truth proceeds from above: freely, independent of one’s own merits. As in the case of the manna, this, too, is the result of a top-down movement. And like the manna, truth is exactly like this: if someone tries to gather it up, hoard it, appropriate it for themselves, and bring it under their control, that truth rots. This is what we sometimes call fundamentalism. Circumstances in which truth becomes corrupted and turns into a tool of oppression, control, and inhumanity.
Many today, as so often in the past, are trying to bring this new bread under their own authority and control, and to distribute it to fellow citizens according to their own personal preferences. In doing so, they fervently invoke the legacy of St. Stephen, or indeed, they invoke Jesus, God, and our Christian traditions. But this is precisely what the Second Commandment warns about: “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.” Most people interpret the Second Commandment to mean that you should not swear using God’s name. Of course, this is true, but it is not its primary meaning. Rather, it means that you should not justify your human desires, decisions, or even mistakes by referring to a higher, divine will. This is what it means not to take the name of the Almighty in vain. Let us boldly remind our public figures of this more often.

Recently, it seems, we have let something out of the bottle that our forebears warned us against. One gets the feeling that rival social groups are setting out to build our nation’s future with a huge pile of “manna”, captured truth, stashed away. You can smell the whole thing from far away. This is not the new bread; rather, it is something old that we thought we had rid ourselves of decades ago.
You see, truth is not something that we can simply vote into existence by a majority vote. If you look at the Book of Moses, it becomes clear that the arrival of the new bread from heaven was not preceded by a vote either. Truth is not the result of a consensus; it is not the same as the will of the majority. Therefore, when one of our fellow human beings raises their voice in the name of truth and justice, the response from the other side can never simply be, “But that is what we voted for”, as we heard it so often in recent months. Manna will still rot and become inedible, whether a majority or a minority seeks to appropriate and possess it for itself.
No Magyar can be an oppressor of another Magyar; neither the majority nor a minority can grant itself such a right. First and foremost, we received these rights from God when He created us in His own image. Secondly, our ancestors have fought for these rights for the past thousand years so that we can live as a free and sovereign nation. They belonged to all of us then, and they belong to us now.
Let someone show us that part of Saint Stephen’s spiritual legacy that would be in line with the currently prevailing spirit of collective national guilt driven by vengeance! In fact this is precisely what he warned against when he wrote: “Be humble, so that God may exalt you now and in the future. Be moderate, so that you may not punish or condemn anyone beyond measure. Be gentle, so that you may never fight against justice. Be honest, so that you may never intentionally bring shame upon anyone.”

And when some believe that they are the privileged ones who receive the divine manna exclusively, they are the sole guardians of a “divinely sanctioned truth”—while their social and ideological rivals get only some sort of a second-hand substitute—at such times, divine sovereignty and freedom come to mind. How do we really find ourselves on one or the other side of the great divide? God simply takes His almighty finger and draws a crooked line in the sand with it. He does not draw it according to our talents, our merits, or our moral achievements, and he is not compelled to bypass our weaknesses and deficiencies either, as we might expect Him to do according to bourgeois notions of good taste. Rather, He draws it wherever He wills. For divine freedom and sovereignty are absolute. And if this seems unjust to us, it is because we judge according to human justice. If it seems illogical, it is because this is human logic.
In other words, no matter how convinced we are that we are living a moral and righteous life, and that the other side is rushing toward its doom. We may even be right in these assertions according to some criteria. Perhaps this does correspond to reality according to widely accepted standards and historic experience. But let us never forget that it was the Lord Himself who drew this line in the sand between us. Therefore, to trample on those on the other side will always remain a despicable act.
How, then, should we handle the new bread, truth? Let us quote Saint Stephen here: “Send it down from Your holy heaven, from the throne of Your glory, that it may be with me and help me in my work, so that I may recognize what is pleasing in Your sight.” Or indeed, paraphrasing the words of the New Testament: “Give us this day our daily new bread.”
