The ancient plane tree on Margaret Island was named the “Tree of Science” on Monday as part of a joint initiative by the Budapest Metropolitan Municipality and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA).
In his welcome remarks, Tamás Freund, former president of the MTA, emphasized that the tree is one of the oldest symbols of human culture, representing knowledge as well. He added that István Széchenyi may well have had the symbolic power of the tree in mind when he launched “the process of creating the Academy, nurturing the Hungarian language, and enriching and sustaining science, the nation, and humanity alike.”
He added that the plane tree is nearly as old as the Hungarian Academy of Sciences itself. It was still a sapling when, following Count István Széchenyi’s proposal—and true to the motto of “homeland and progress”—the Academy was founded, which has since become the defining intellectual home of Hungarian science.
Freund expressed his hope that the tree would remain a symbol of science, perseverance, and confidence in the future for many generations to come.
Mihály Pósfai, President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, emphasized in his speech that the tree connects the past and the future. If the plane tree is indeed two hundred years old, then it has survived the 1838 ice flood and the wars, all manner of construction and destruction, just as the Academy has endured similar upheavals throughout its history, he added.
As he said, the plane tree is also an apt symbol because it constantly renews itself by shedding its bark, just as the Academy faces a similar task: while preserving the values accumulated over two hundred years—such as the freedom of science and respect for achievement—it must renew itself.
He added that in the 21st century, the Academy must pay attention to the new generations of researchers who are conducting their work using different methods and in a different international environment than their predecessors. To achieve renewal, it must also involve the younger generations of researchers in its work.
Pósfai also pointed out that just as a tree is only complete in harmony with the surrounding plants, the Academy is not strong on its own, but only in conjunction with other scientific institutions and the community of researchers who run them.
It is my wish that this tree stand here on Margaret Island for a long time to come, reminding us that the values of the past and renewal together form a strong institution and together will support Hungarian science in the future,”
Pósfai concluded his speech.
In his welcome remarks, Gergely Karácsony, Mayor of Budapest, emphasized that although the capital is 153 years old, the history of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Budapest are closely intertwined, and both have contributed to the nation’s greatness.
The mayor recalled that when the city government joined the “science-friendly municipalities” initiative, they proposed selecting a tree nearly as old as the Academy itself instead of planting a new one. This nearly two-hundred-year-old plane tree inspires respect in every citizen, he added.
Karácsony emphasized: it is time to once again respect science, which is constantly under attack by the spirit of the age, which seeks simple answers to complex questions.
The mayor spoke of autonomy, without which, in his words, it is impossible to conduct free research, expand knowledge, or govern a city.
“It is important that we seize the opportunity now opened up by this change, which is committed to various forms of social autonomy and respect for knowledge,” he emphasized.
He noted that there is currently no other institution in Hungary that people trust more than the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and he expressed his hope that the political sphere would also commit to strengthening this trust.
The ceremony concluded with a performance by Kossuth Prize-winning actor András Bálint.
