After an eight-year diplomatic hiatus, Bavaria and Hungary have resumed their political relations at the highest level. Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder personally traveled to Budapest on a working visit to agree with the new Hungarian Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, on a strategic realignment and the establishment of a joint intergovernmental commission.
After nearly a decade of muted relations with Viktor Orbán’s national-conservative government, the Free State of Bavaria and Hungary’s new EU-aligned government are reviving their formally close ties. At the invitation of Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar, CSU leader Markus Söder traveled to the Hungarian capital, reported Index.
At a joint press conference following the negotiations, both heads of government gave a positive assessment of the talks.
Markus Söder emphasized the deep, historically rooted relations between the two countries. The leader of the formerly Christian centrist party celebrated “Hungary’s return to the heart of Europe” and expressed his delight at the election victory of Péter Magyar and the TISZA Party.
Both parties—the CSU and the TISZA Party—are members of the European People’s Party (EPP), from which the former Hungarian ruling party, FIDESZ, had once withdrawn.
Welcome back, #Ungarn! Die Rückkehr Ungarns in die Mitte Europas und zu unseren gemeinsamen Beziehungen freut uns sehr. During the term of the previous government under Viktor Orbán, Hungary and Bavaria grew apart, leading Markus Söder to skip Hungary during his visits in 2019 and to sharply criticize the Hungarian head of government at the time. The strained relationship also meant that the Bavarian Minister-President never once invited Viktor Orbán to his party’s conferences.
A central topic of the discussions was Hungary’s domestic political developments. According to Markus Söder, all of Europe is watching closely to see how the country is now taking concrete steps back toward what he defines as “the rule of law.”
In addition to political rapprochement, the focus was on the economy. Bavaria is Hungary’s most important economic partner, accounting for 30 percent of all German investments.
To put this relationship on a new footing, a new joint government commission will be established. In addition, cooperation between Hungarian and Bavarian universities is to be expanded in order to gain a technological edge in global competition.
It was an honour to welcome the Minister-President of Bavaria back to Hungary after a ten-year absence.

The two politicians agreed that, in addition to the traditional automotive industry, sectors such as cutting-edge technology, artificial intelligence, pharmaceutical research, innovation, and the defense industry must be prioritized in the future. At the same time, both heads of government took a clear stance in the European debate on mobility. The phase-out of internal combustion engines currently under discussion in Brussels must be reconsidered; the common goal is to “save the internal combustion engine.”
European budget policy, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), and cohesion funds were also debated. To his guests’ surprise, Péter Magyar did not hold back in his criticism of Brussels’ economic policy failures. Given the complex situation facing the European Union, “more than ever, we need voices of reason as well as moderate and well-founded arguments,” said the Hungarian Prime Minister. “We are good Europeans; we trust in Europe, which is why strengthening competitiveness is important,” added Markus Söder. However, he noted, this also requires the united support of the other member states.
The Hungarian head of government subsequently posted an optimistic summary on his social media page: “It was an honor to welcome the Minister-President of Bavaria back to Hungary after a ten-year absence,” the post reads. Péter Magyar highlighted the enormous importance of major Bavarian corporations such as BMW, Audi, Siemens, and Knorr-Bremse, which together employ 57,000 Hungarians.
It is rare to hold talks with a Western European leader with whom we agree on almost everything — from economic development and EU policy to the importance of high-tech industries, artificial intelligence, and research and development,”
said the Hungarian prime minister.
The partnership is designed for the long term. The next bilateral meeting is scheduled for 2027. Péter Magyar also extended an invitation to Markus Söder to attend the 70th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution and the 1956 struggle for freedom, and in turn accepted his Bavarian counterpart’s invitation for a return visit to Munich.
Traditionally strong ties between the Christian Social Union of Bavaria and FIDESZ have soured following the 2015 migrant invasion, when Viktor Orbán had tried to persuade the then leader of CSU, Horst Seehofer, to resist Angela Merkel’s open-door policies. After initial hesitation and ambiguity though the leading Bavarian party had adopted its larger coalition partner, the CDU’s migration policies, severing ties with Viktor Orbán’s government. Today both parties are on the defensive to the anti-migration and euro-skeptic Alternative for Germany (AfD), a party that is dominating polls especially in East Germany.
