The president appointed the ministers of Péter Magyar’s strongly left-leaning government in Budapest on Tuesday, officially forming the new cabinet. At the ceremony held Tuesday afternoon at the Sándor Palace, Tamás Sulyok handed over letters of appointment to the government’s sixteen ministers.
Under Hungary’s Constitution, ministers are appointed by the president upon the recommendation of the prime minister. The Cabinet is officially constituted once the ministers have been appointed.
The sixteen ministers of the newly formed government are as follows:
- Szabolcs Bóna, Minister for Agriculture and Food Economy
- László Gajdos, Minister for the Living Environment
- Márta Görög, Minister of Justice
- Zsolt Hegedűs, Minister of Health
- István Kapitány, Minister for Economy and Energy
- András Kármán, Minister of Finance
- Vilmos Kátai-Németh, Minister for Social and Family Affairs
- Judit Lannert, Minister for Children and Education
- Viktória Lőrincz, Minister for Regional and Rural Development
- Anita Orbán, Minister of Foreign Affairs
- Gábor Pósfai, Minister of Interior
- Bálint Ruff, Minister heading the Prime Minister’s Office
- Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi, Minister of Defense
- Zoltán Tanács, Minister for Science and Technology
- Zoltán Tarr, Minister for Social Relations and Culture
- Dávid Vitézy, Minister for Transport and Investment
Péter Magyar’s rhetoric toward Preident Sulyok following his election victory has remained notably confrontational.
After previously stating several times that the president should resign voluntarily or else they would remove him from office, the newly elected prime minister urged Tamás Sulyok on Monday not to seek a joint photo opportunity with the ministers.
On Tuesday, Magyar wrote on Facebook that members of the Tisza government “do not wish to receive congratulations from the puppet president, nor participate in a joint photo opportunity, either upon receiving their appointments or after taking their oath of office.”
As the new cabinet was being appointed inside Parliament, the threats towards democratically elected constitutional figures continued by Magyar’s political director, Bálint Ruff. In an intimidating and highly combative tone not heard since the end of communism, the nominee to head the Prime Minister’s Office promised the greatest political and economic reckoning in history during a parliamentary committee meeting.
The former advisor to the Hungarian socialists and liberals, Ruff repeated his threat that he will outlaw what he called “propaganda,” that is topics like migration or war in order to “protect children.” “The state cannot spend hundreds of billions of forints annually to harass other people,” he said, alluding to Fidesz’s earlier information campaigns about the war in Ukraine or the dangers of illegal mass migration.
Former Minister of Justice, Bence Tuzson, repeatedly interrupted Ruff during his speech, then accused him of inciting hatred. He said that the Tisza government’s planned time limits on members of parliament speaking at committee meetings and ministerial hearings amount to a restriction on freedom of expression.
It is very surprising that during a ministerial address, we do not hear a ministerial program, but rather a rambling, lie-filled political incitement to hatred,”
Tuzson later said, according to Index, when he had the opportunity to question the minister.
The former justice minister also said: “The incitement to hatred took place on your side. Do you think it is compatible with the rule of law to seek to dismantle the system of checks and balances by calling on the president to resign? To call on the leaders of other branches of government to resign? You want to dismantle the system of checks and balances.”
After individually receiving their letters of appointment from the president, the ministers stood beside Magyar and turned toward the photographers.
The members of the new government are scheduled to take their oath during the plenary session of the National Assembly beginning at 4:00 p.m. Péter Magyar was elected prime minister on May 9 during the inaugural sitting of the National Assembly.
