The mystery of the works of the American naval base in Nea Makri, Greece, which was shut down in 1990, has people who investigate unexplainable phenomena speak of a Greek Area 51. Adding to the intrigue, an ancient Egyptian temple located right next to the base has only deepened suspicions about the site’s true purpose.
The base, known as NAVCOMMSTA Nea Makri Greece, was located about five miles from Marathon, the site of one of the most crucial battles in world history.
The site is allegedly located where underwater electromagnetic waves connect the communications naval base in Nea Makri with Norfolk, Virginia, close to Langley, where the CIA headquarters is located, according to investigators of unexplained phenomena.
The construction of the US base at Nea Makri began in 1953 when the military cooperation between the United States and Greece had been solidified as the two countries’ armies allied in the Korean War (1950-1953). The base permanently suspended its operations in August 1990.
Two days before the final lowering of the American flag from the base on August 17, 1990, the following message was read to its personnel (Navy News Service): “…The Nea Makri base ran an impressive “Marathon”, offering telecommunications support immediate, safe and reliable, to the Sixth Fleet, NATO forces in the Mediterranean and American forces in Southeast Asia. You responded successfully to each new challenge… …The technological developments that have occurred over the years have allowed us to relocate our activity elsewhere, without loss in operational capacity…”.
The Nea Makri base was not A NATO base but purely American. The neighboring underground naval telecommunications base at the foot of Penteli Mountain, 5.5 miles away, belonged to the Greek Navy but also served as a NATO base.
The area of the Greek base was expropriated in 1958, with the official justification at the time being the creation of a space to house the national relics of the Greek Navy.
However, Greek researchers noticed that in that year the US Navy had started experimenting with the extremely low-frequency (ELF) program, which uses electric and magnetic fields to communicate with submerged submarines.
Electromagnetic waves in the ELF and SLF frequency ranges (3–300 Hz) can penetrate seawater to depths of hundreds of meters, allowing signals to be sent to submarines at their operating depths. Building an ELF transmitter is a great challenge, as they have to work at incredibly long wavelengths. The US Navy’s Project ELF system, a variant of a larger system proposed under Project Sanguine, operated at 76 hertz.
The Greek Area 51 at Nea Makri
Instead of the place to house historical objects of the Greek Navy on Mount Penteli, a little later, an underground naval telecommunications base was constructed on the site, which officially operated in cooperation with the American naval telecommunications base in Nea Makri. In 1983, the Nea Makri base was designated by presidential decree as a “Naval Fort”, while the surrounding area was designated a “Surveilled Zone”.
No one was allowed to go near the base, leading researchers and paranormal activity investigators to dub the naval telecommunications base the ‘Greek Area 51.’
After the US naval base was shut down, the telecommunications base on Mount Penteli also closed, leaving the area deserted. However, a few years later, researchers who visited the region discovered a container filled with electronic devices hidden inside a Greek Orthodox Chapel located at the top of the mountain.
According to reports, the container belonged to EYP, Greece’s National Intelligence Service. It was removed from the church’s interior between 2004 and 2005 after it was emptied of transceivers and other electronic instruments. Its current location is unknown.

The theory explanation
Specific, costly, and in-depth studies would be required, with specialized measurements by expert scientists and special instruments to substantiate such a theory. However, proponents of this theory argue that the Penteli Observatory records frequent and unusually intense surges in the geomagnetic field in the area, which often reach conditions of a “severe geomagnetic storm.” According to scientific studies, these fluctuations coincide in time with seismic vibrations.
Researchers who support the theory argue that the electromagnetic waves of the telluric currents—channels of electromagnetic energy flow that run underground through the Earth—primarily belong to the ELF band. The US Navy built a global telecommunications system based precisely on ELF waves.
The ELF waves of this system propagate basically through the Ionosphere, and from it, through the geomagnetic field, into the subsurface. There is an ionosphere observation station on Mount Penteli that has been funded by NATO research programs for years, while at the northeastern foot of the mountain, just 4.5 kilometers from the point where the Nea Makri base was located, operates the Dionysus Satellite Center. The center deals with “studies of the Geoid in Greek space and changes in the Earth’s gravity field”.
Relatively intense and frequent geomagnetic field disturbances also occur in Virginia, USA The initial “Project ELF” tests occurred in North Carolina and Virginia. The Penteli Observatory was established on Koufos Hill in Penteli in 1958, and later moved northeast, very close to the area where, according to publications, one end of the electromagnetic channel is located. The construction of the underground naval telecommunications base of the Greek Navy, just two kilometers from Koufos Hill, also commenced in 1958, the same year that the first research of “Project ELF” began.

CIA and the “Magnetic Tunnel”
Coincidences further reinforce the certainty of those who attribute a paranormal element to all unexplainable phenomena. These coincidences supplement the belief in a “Greek Area 51” at the site around the former US base.
According to a Greek language book with the archives of the Greek-origin CIA operative Thomas Karamessines and US diplomat Henry Tasca who served as Ambassador in Athens (1969-1974), the choice of Nea Makri as the site of a Naval Communications Base was not random.
In a particular site, a rare natural phenomenon makes the usefulness of the location unique in the world. This is the “Magnetic Eye”, located in the sea strip between Nea Makri and Petalia in the Evian Gulf and constitutes one end of a “Magnetic Tunnel”.
The first category of Earth’s magnetic activities is external, which occurs in the atmosphere and space, including the Van Allen radiation belts, and is responsible for biological changes.
The second magnetic activity develops in the bowels of the planet. The most amazing phenomenon of this activity is the “Magnetic Tunnel”. It can be imagined as a tube with a diameter of a few hundred meters to a few kilometers that starts from one point on the Earth’s surface and ends at another point on its surface, usually on the “backside”.

The Egyptian Eye in the Sky
The coincidences around the Greek Area 51 persist. Just two miles from Nea Makri is a seaside community called Mati (eye in Greek). The “Magnetic Eye” of the tunnel is located in this area.
But the unexplainable coincidences continue, fueling the fervor of paranormal theorists. In the 19th century, an ancient Egyptian gods’ sanctuary was mentioned by foreign archaeologists in the area called Brexiza discovered across from the seaside village Mati.
Extensive excavations in 2002 near the abandoned base area revealed one of the largest sanctuaries of Egyptian deities ever found in Greece. This sanctuary, covering approximately four acres, was dedicated to the goddess Isis. Two well-preserved statues of Isis and her son Horus were discovered among other findings.
The “Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods of Brexiza,” as it is now called, dates back to the Roman era, specifically the 2nd century CE. The complex was founded by Herodes Atticus around 160 CE. The great orator and sophist chose Marathon for the foundation of the sanctuary because it was his place of origin and residence.
